About this item

  • Remove the thinnest of shavings with this premium smooth plane—slightly wider and heavier than the No. 4 for more heft.

Bench Dog's No. 4-1/2 smoother takes the thinnest of shavings for an exceptionally fine finish. When compared to the smaller No. 4, this plane has a heftier feel, ideal for challenging grain. Its blade is also 3/8'' wider than the No. 4, which works well for edge planing thick lumber. Used skillfully, it can be the final step before finishing, and it also makes a good general-purpose plane. Quality materials, precision machining and solid construction result in a hand plane that's an absolute pleasure to use. The sole is precision ground flat. The blade is made from thick 1/8'' hardened carbon steel for reduced chatter and excellent edge retention. Solid sapele is used for the comfortable tote and knob, adding a touch of elegance. Each plane includes a case, sock, manual and a Certificate of Inspection with measurements specific to your plane for sole flatness and blade hardness.

So four things stand out about this plane.1. It is a solid 4 1/2, good millwork, features, size, weight, blade, etc. There is nothing wrong design wise about the plane. IE: There is nothing stopping you from using this tool.2. The blade is super thick, but is not going to be finished. That mirror finish and edge needs to be done by the buyer. The tool marks were still present, it appears they finished the blade with a rotary grinder. The bevel was good, the chip breaker fit perfectly.3. The Frog needs to be placed all the way back to fit the chip breaker and blade correctly. Once this was done the plane was taking perfect shavings. I believe this is due to the thickness of both the blade and chip breaker.4. The sole had to be ground flat. This is simple enough, you put some 120 or 180 sand paper on a flat surface and get an arm work out. The hollow was in the middle of the sole which is what you want. The finish on the frog, and plane were better then the blade. The plane body and frog were both very square. When completed with the above actions the plane is probably the nicest I own, it is heavy like I wanted, it can shoot, it can take on end grain and hardwoods, it can take shavings that leave a glass finish, it can vary it's cut from taking dust to taking huge cuts.

Blade came off during shipping and cut into everything in the box. Sharpened edge hit at least three hard blows into iron parts, both now have significant damage. Front knob gouged. Paint was not well done and ran onto polished sides and is now missing from dozens of blade scraped areas. Inner and outer box like new. Really bad internal packaging.Frog machining isn’t tight. Frog slid 3/32 inch sideways when I was trying to advance the frog. Probably would not have kept it anyway because of the frog mechanism.Totally confused how this could have been made by same company as my last two bench dog planes. Returned

This is a quality tool. Mostly good right out of the box. Everything was within tolerances and well made. Good feel and heft to it too.The iron is hard and wide, so it took a good long time to hone. After doing so though, takes great shavings and works very well.

Machining was nice.Sole was very flat so just a light polish.Throat did not require tuning.Sharpened blade to 8000 on the wet stones.Instantly planning continuous 42" ribbons at .025" on edge of 4/4 white ashLove the heft - just feels good.
