About this item

  • THE IDEAL VISUAL OR IMAGING TELESCOPE FOR PAYLOADS UNDER 30 LB: The most compact and portable of Celestron’s German equatorial mounts offers the same rigidity as our larger mounts with minimal flexure and an improved industrial design.
  • STUNNING IMAGES WITH EDGEHD OPTICS: EdgeHD optical design fully corrects for coma and field curvature, delivering a truly flat field. This 8” scope also includes StarBright XLT coatings for better light transmission.
  • A VERSATILE ASTROIMAGING SYSTEM: Choose from 3 focal ratios—native f/10, f/7 with optional reducer, or f/2 with Fastar/Hyperstar compatibility.
  • EVERY FEATURE AN ASTROIMAGER WANTS: Permanently programmable periodic error correction (PPEC), an autoguider port, the ability to image across the meridian, CPWI software, All-Star Polar Alignment, and more.
  • DUAL SADDLE DOVETAIL PLATE: Use your mount with a variety of optical tubes; it accommodates both CG-5 and CGE style dovetails.

The Advanced VX (AVX) raises the bar in mid-level telescopes, providing many of the features found on Celestron’s most sophisticated German equatorial mounts at an extremely affordable price. The Advanced VX 8” EdgeHD telescope combines the AVX mount with Celestron’s best optics, the EdgeHD optical system. This setup offers the astroimager maximum versatility – allowing up to 3 different f-stop configurations. Users can attach a camera to the rear of the telescope and shoot at f/10 or attach our optional 8” EdgeHD focal reducer to shoot at f/7. Additionally, EdgeHD is Fastar/Hyperstar compatible, enabling imagers to shoot at ultra-fast f/2. No matter which configuration you choose, EdgeHD gives you pinpoint stars all the way to the edge of the sensor. The AVX mount provides superior performance plus Celestron’s most advanced technologies: All-Star Polar Alignment, Celestron PWI telescope control software, and permanently programmable periodic error correction (PPEC). AVX’s computerized GoTo capability automatically tracks objects as they move across the night sky. The mount includes ports for the included NexStar+ hand control, an autoguider, and 2 AUX ports. It also features a dual saddle plate that accommodates both CG-5 and CGE-style dovetails. The revolutionary EdgeHD optical design produces aberration-free images with pinpoint stars all the way to the edge of the field-of-view of today’s largest imaging sensors and wide-field eyepieces. EdgeHD virtually eliminates field curvature and off-axis coma. Finally, your AVX includes Celestron PWI (CPWI), the most advanced astronomy software provided with any consumer-grade telescope. Celestron co-developed CPWI with PlaneWave Instruments; the software includes many of the same features used on PlaneWave’s observatory-class telescopes.

The telescope was great, best image quality but the mount wasn't working upon arrival. I was able to send it back with no problems.

Scope is incredible. Wish the mount was more powerful.

Nice look. Heavy and well built. Uses some antiquated accessories (who still uses the mini USB cable). Now for the bad part. As expected it is heavy, so why not provide necessary handles so the unit can be transported when desired. You shouldn't need a PhD in computer science to update the firmware with the aforementioned antiquated mini USB cable. Nothing on the hand controller seems to work. For over $2000, I find this telescope more a junk toy than useful for serious viewing. However, it's too heavy for my kids to just play with it, so use as a toy is not possible. My suggestion is that you should think very seriously about purchasing this telescope.

This product is made in China. The manual states that the mount has a buble to level it but someone from Customer service told me that it hasn't never explained why I assume is a typo in the manual.Other thing you need to know is that better you add a polar scope in order to align with the Celestial Pole if you plan to do astrophotography. I've tried the alignement witht he computer and definetly didnt work I guess I need more training, but I prefer the Polar Scope instead. The manual is awfully printed, better you get a good printer and reprint, pictures are impossible to see and they are needed to understand how to adjust the telescope and mount.I added a red dot finder, I prefer over the scope finder they provided. In summary, not a great product, I guess you get what you pay, for a telescope this is accesible but at this price I seriously would consider saving more money and look for a better option because this is not cheap.Customer service is very poor I guess is in China, I get answers 3 days or more later.I've bought an accesory directly from Celestron and is in back order, a month later I received an email saying the accesory will be ready mid october. My feeling is they dont care about customer service. Not very happy.

Very good Telescope, the optics are about as you're going to get in this size, and the light transmission through the front glass is maximized through the coatings on it. The mount tracks very well, and without an autoguider I'm able to get 120 second exposures without star trails. The mirror focus locks are particularly useful when photographing as well... the only thing I would change with this telescope would be the focus knob to have more precise control.

Superb optics. Quality craftsmanship, you can't beat the quality of this scope. Perfect for visual use and superb for astro photography.

An excellent telescope and equatorial mount combination. The Advanced VX mount box weighed 61 pounds and measured 37 inches long by 26 inches wide by 12 inches tall. The EdgeHD 8 inch telescope box weighed 22 pounds and measured 25 inches long by 15 inches wide by 14.75 inches tall. The mount and tripod are solid with the EdgeHD 8 inch telescope attached. Vibration while viewing through the eyepiece is not an issue. The telescope and mount are heavy when fully assembled, but when broken down for transport, the components are easily liftable with no one component being terribly heavy. The mount's alignment routine is straightforward and GoTo and tracking are accurate. The AVX mount is compatible with Vixen style dovetail rails so it can be used with many other telescopes in addition to the EdgeHD 8 inch. The Celestron Power Tank or similar type item is needed to power the mount. All in all a good package for those who want an excellent telescope with a solid equatorial GoTo mount that's not too heavy to lug around and set up.

I had to return the mount, It was dead. Celestron was very good about it, they just sent me a new box. Everything worked and I am happy.
