I'm new to hand planes but after watching some videos I was able to get the sole, sides and plane iron sharpened in about a hour. I would consider that good for a budget plane. It's definitely better than the Spear and Jackson that I had to return due to the chip breaker being bent from the start. Like I said though, the depth adjustment is kind of a joke when it comes to how much backlash there is.

Update July 30th 2023 I received the replacement #4 plane and it's fine. I honed the iron and tuned the sole some and it cuts like a dream. Groz didn't want to #3 with the angled hole back and it seemed a shame to throw away a brand new hand plane. Historically not all bench planes have a frog adjustment screw, so I decided to delete it on the #3 and give it a try. Now I'm even more disappointed that the machining is poor on this tool.... because it actually planes like a dream. I've got that think shaving (.002) maple with easeSo Groz get your act together because you've got a great product, it's a quality control issue.I've adjusted my rating to reflect the situation and product to a four star rating. Groz did the right thing by replacing the poor quality plane and the new #4 is issue free.Update: Groz is sending me a replacement plane, no charge. I'll update again when it's receivedAfter reading mixed reviews I decided to give the SP-3 Smoothing Plane a shot. Right out of the box it looks like a nice little smoother. After honing the iron it was impossible to seat it straight. Upon investigation I found the frog adjustment screw is tapped at an angle (see photo). I've contacted Groz directly to see what their solution is.....stay tuned I'll update soon as they get back to me.
