Nice unit. Used other ones with no issues. Tried to in stall but 180 out. I could have installed, rerouted wires but why. Something with quality control. Will try another one because hope it was a fluke.

I received this distributor and installed it. I got the engine timed and could never get the engine to idle properly. Drove it for a day and it completely quit. Went to verify the timing and since this was a SVDA it got times with the vacuum advance plugged. It started up and ran fine. After attaching the vacuum advance it quit running. Turns out the diaphragm in the vacuum advance was completely open and was just a big vacuum leak. Returned.

I’ve been running this svda distributor on an air cooled fuel injected 1980 vanagon for 5 years, with stock blue bosch coil. It was points and condenser originally.I’m about to order another one because the ignitor ii finally crapped the bed, and it’s almost as expensive to replace that unit and still have a pretty worn distributor. Out of the box the distributor needed going through to get the advance worked properly. If I remember correctly I had to take an old points file and deburr to get it to operate correctly—also one of the wires was catching and needed rerouting. So it’s not exactly plug and play. Also, as mentioned the distributor body had to be rotated I think either 90 or 180 from my old distributor so the vac canister would be clear and able rotate to set the timing. So basically I had to move the plug wires so that the rotor pointed to the correct plug wire for the cylinder. Just make note of where you’re at with a sharpie on the cap of your old distributor—plug wire position and where the rotor is pointing. Neutral and chock the wheels and e brake—don’t move the van! Then fit the new distributor how it will go, mine would only work with the vac canister pointed toward the bumper. The shaft only goes one way into the drive gear in the motor, so wherever the rotor is pointing then is your starting point. Put the cap on—it only goes on one way cuz of the notch—and note where the rotor is pointing. Sharpies are helpful tools. Then start putting on your plug wires. As long as you know your firing order (1-4-3-2) and what cylinder it points to to start with, you should be good on plug wires and ready to crank and get out your timing light.

I put this on a newly rebuilt 1974 1600 cc engine, but it didn't run well or even consistently poorly. Ignition checked out okay in the driveway, but out on the road the engine was weak and very slow to accelerate compared to the old 009 distributor on a thoroughly worn-out engine. After a frustrating month of weekends, this distributor failed completely--on the road of course, requiring a tow home. Of course by now I can't just return it to Amazon.Update: it took a couple of weeks for Pertronix to replace the solid state module and return the distributor, after which it worked for about 100 miles before the vacuum advance failed. So they sent me a new vacuum unit which I installed. Several hundred miles later it's still working. Near full advance the timing seems to jitter around more than I've seen on any other engine, but on the road it's running fairly well. Hopefully it'll last, but just in case the old 009 unit rides with us.

The vendor I ordered from (Dune Buggy Warehouse) has always stuck behind their products and fast on customer service; thumbs up to Austen! I have used Pertronix stuff since the early 80s and love reliability, price and simple approach; that being said, I gave them a 3 on this unit only because the "Q&A before shipping was a failure." Look closely at the photos and notice the grounding strap for the advance/pickup plate is riding under the reluctor (magnetic unit.) This is unacceptable and needs to be moved, however moving might loose the ground rivet and cause grounding/misfire issues. Might need to add a extra ground from the pickup plate mounting nuts to assure permanent ground connections. Either way Pertronix needs to get on this asap.

Bought this for my son's bug. As everybody else reported it was a PITA to get in with the super tight o-ring. Even lubricating it didn't seem to help. We got it in but it took an act of God. The wiring was easy and it works great - I recommend!

I replaced a cheap 034 SVDA points distributor on my 72 VW Ghia's 1600 DP with this one. Much better fuel economy , power, and more advance. Very smooth power delivery now (feels like fuel injection) and I gained about 2 mpg. I also saw about a 25 degree drop in cylinder head temps. Works great with my Dual Kadron carbs and my Bosch blue coil. I would recommend replacing the cap with a genuine Bosch red cap. The cheap cap on it has play in it - can turn it a few degrees back and forth when mounted on the distributor. And the wire sockets are a bit oversized too and do not hold the plug wires tight. This caused an intermittent low speed miss for me,which was corrected with a good quality Bosch cap. I also used a genuine VW o-ring. The one that came on it was too tight of a fit to push in to my engine. Your mileage may vary.
