I have had the Doorbell Fon for 17+ years, installed by the contractor for my courtyard home, where you can't just answer the "front door" (actually it's the courtyard door) without it when the doorbell rings. This system has a speaker at the door and when the button is pressed, it rings a distinctive tone on the telephone. You answer with the handset and can speak to the person outside; press the star key on the phone to unlock the door for entry. It worked like a champ for most of the time I had it. I ran into problems and had difficulty finding a competent person to repair it (Xfinity house techs were not helpful - I have Xfinity Voice, cable and Internet). An A/V person recently spent a lot of time troubleshooting the system and finally recommended replacing both the controller (the brain) and the speaker. While it was a bit challenging to install in that smallish spaghetti box full of cable and cat 5 wires - and the controller - in the garage wall, he did ultimately wire it properly and it is working perfectly. I could have opted for Nest or some other video option, but that requires a mobile app and my wife just isn't going to use that. Replacing the legacy Doorbell Fon, which is not a 21st century piece of technology, made the most sense and it works for us. No, with this model, there is no visualization of the caller (coming soon, I'm told), but I am happy with this. There is a risk of lightning taking out this unit (perhaps that is what happened to it a couple of months ago), but the original was installed in 2001 and worked until just a few months ago. I recommend it if you have my type of situation, where there is no way to communicate with someone coming to your door without walking from the house to the door.

I bought the DoorBell Fon before it was available on Amazon. My objective was to keep my wife and daughter from having to answer the door when I am not in quarters. I hired a master electrician / communications technician for the project. In addition to installing the DoorBell Fon equipment, he chose and installed what he described as the best gel surge protectors available for my circuit breaker box and line surge protector for my fiber optic telephone line.In spite of the protection, my first unit was disabled by a lightening strike which also took out the FIOS box. I purchased a replacement unit that arrived in defective condition. The units are supposed to be able to cover two doorways. The pins for the front door on the second unit were inoperative. The communications technician called the company and talked to their technical support. Their solution? Since we were only going to cover one door, they suggested we change the wiring to the back door.Subsequently, the second unit was disabled during a storm. None of the other sensitive electronic equipment in my quarters, including televisions, DVRs, computers, sewing machines, and accessories were affected by either storm -- only the DoorBell Fon was damaged.I wrote a complaint letter to the company. The head of technical support wrote, ". . . my personal recommendation is to purchase a new system from one of our competitors". So far, I have approximately $2,000 invested in installation, both systems and every conceivable protection to keep them running.I took the company representative's advice. My wife and daughter's safety is paramount.

Works fine.... be aware that you'll need electrical wiring skills AND that the front/rear doorbell wires are rerouted to where the houses' central phone wires are located... could be difficult if you do not have wiring that goes from where the bell and bell transformer are located is (not usual in houses) and where your (incoming/central) telephone wires are located. Luckily I have structured wiring in this house so the rerouting was minimal but don't underestimate this part of the job and do a "survey" prior to buying it . Also it would be nice if the doorbell ring could be modified to be really different from incoming calls.Once installed, we (my wife) really likes it and would recommend it to a DIY'er friend.

We needed a way to answer the door bell for my wife who is unable to walk. We tried a couple of wireless systems but they weren't reliable enough, sometimes working and sometimes not. I bought and installed the Doorbell Fon at our main entrance and it works very well. Installation we fairly easy and I was able to re-use the existing door bell wiring. It helps to have a little knowledge of telephone wiring but the directions are quite clear. One other bonus is that it can be answered by any telephone in the house. This system is designed for locations with an existing wired telephone system, it is not designed for locations that only use cellular service.

I love this. When someone comes to the door and presses the bell, your phone rings so you never have to open the door unless you want to. It was easy to install. Works great. Love this.

Whenever we lose power from a storm or have a surge this shorts out and disrupts my entire phone system. Had it replaced once. Happened again and now I want it removed. Resulted in money spent on service calls both times.
