Both of mine failed within 2000km and both times 50+ km of highway driving home. Both failed in the same location on the boot much like others. Grease everywhere, smelled terrible, looks terrible. Terrible part, shame ford for not producing more and shame on Dorman for even selling this. Obtained a driveshaft from Cardone that has worked much better so far.Do not buy this. It is not even a temp fix. It will try and and leave you stranded. The only solace in the fact was I drove it home both times and absolutely finished it off. Currently working with Amazon to get a refund (they sent me a replacement once as Dorman referred me to them). Dorman says to go to original purchaser however the return window is closed. Will update on conclusion.

Replaced my front driveshaft CV on my 2005 Ford Ranger FX4 with this unit. Be aware that getting the cap on is quite difficult, but work your way around in a circle and it will eventually sit on. Putting it in the freezer helps.VERY IMPORTANT NOTE - This joint needed to wear in. I put the newly reassembled driveshaft in then went for a drive, including highway speeds, and on the highway something felt wrong, so I pulled over and checked the joint and it was SCREAMING hot. After much googling the consensus was that you should drive new joints for 5 minutes or so before stopping to let it cool. Do this 3-4 times with slowly increasing times/speeds, checking the temperature of the joint at intervals. After a little bit of this the joint is now "normal" temp after driving even long trips. Scared the crap out of me initially! Good luck, those who venture into this job. Its a fun one.

A replacement driveshaft is $384, compared to less than $100 for this kit. It comes with all the hardware to rebuild one CV joint. With the you-tube instructional videos out there, there is no reason not to rebuild your CV joint on your driveshaft and spend the $200 you save on your favorite person

FIts 2000 Mercury Mountaineer V8 automatic. Had an unknown noise that every now and then would come from underneath the vehicle, somewhere near the transmission area (sounded like a hammer violently hitting a metal pipe when vehicle moved forward). Didn't do it all the time, but was intimidating when it did (entire vehicle would shutter). Pulled it into the garage, and started banging on various things (with my hand/fist) to replicate the sound. When I hit the driveshaft, I heard it (faintly). There was a TINY bit of play in the driveshaft CV joint. Purchase this kit, replaced the old one and viola- problem solved. Had it on for well over a year and no issues to date. Good purchase.

I could not find these parts anywhere locally. Ford wanted $500 for the complete shaft. I thought I would try this. Its been a few months so far, with no problems. 4 wheel drive works great and no noise anymore.

Worked fine, other thanAs others have noted the bolts that came with the kit were a hair too short, just reused my original bolts. As I don't have a crimping tool, getting the clamp crimped around the driveshaft was awkward, but I got it to work.Sure beats buying a new driveshaft.

Considerably less expensive then an entire front drive axle this kit lets you fix the source of the problem, the CV joint at the rear of the front shaft. The bolts provided in the kit were too short so make sure you reuse the originals. The repair lasted for 1.5 years before I noticed a small 2cm cut in the rubber boot. Unfortunately all the grease by this time had escaped, the joint was dirty and was not in great shape. Overtime I have noticed there are a few warnings signs to help alert you that this joint could be failing.1) On initial shift from park to drive you might hear a light clunk or ding sound. This is likely the slack in the joint making the sound as there is little grease remaining internally.2) Transmission is "lazy" to shift into near gear while driving. ex: if it was supposed to shift around 2,500rpm you may notice it drift up towards 3,000+ and by letting off the gas the shift will occur.3) Loud knocking, vibrations predominantly on the driver front side of the car. Usually around 20mph+ in drive. By the time scenario 3 comes around the joint will likely need a full service and you'll need a tow.If the rubber boot quality was higher this kit would be a 5 star product. Because of the low quality boot frequent inspections should be performed during a regular oil change.

The boot is junk and without a quality boot the quality of the rest of the piece does not matter.I ordered the part November 6, 2013 installed within a few days. It is now 10 months later and judging by the customer's (mother in-law) complaints the boot has likely been torn for at least two months. That means it lasted only 8 months.Dorman generally provides quality components that I don't hesitate to buy and use in my own vehicles, but this one is seriously missing the mark.Dorman is the only provider of this part and this part is very important as you cannot buy the CV joint from Ford, only the entire driveshaft for nearly $600.Dorman, if you are listening, please improve the quality of the boot material, then send me a new kit and I will gladly update my review and praise your responsiveness to your customers.

I bought this item and it worked. The bolts are the wrong ones for my 01 explorer which is really annoying. Installation was pretty easy but after having it installed for 7 months I was under the vehicle for maintenence and noticed the boot was ruined. There is a worn out spot all the way around the boot and the joint is completely exposed. If it wasnt for the groove that the boot should be clamped into I would have thought I did it wrong. Luckily I caught it in time I think to save the joint. Problem is thus far, I have not been able to find just the boot piece. I am pretty disappointed in the reliability.

I damaged the 4WD CV joint during a clutch replacement. A new drive shaft with CV joint was over $250. This was the perfect solution. The bolts that came with it are unusable so save the old bolts, but I now have 4WD and no grinding noise. Youtube the Dorman part # and the video shows you exactly how to replace the CV joint in 30 min or less. Thanks Amazon!!! 1998 Ford Ranger and Explorer.

I purchased the Dorman Driveshaft CV Joint kit for my Mercury Mountaineer from Amazon because they were the cheapest price around. I called my local auto parts store and they told me that I was going to have to replace the whole driveshaft. Well...I didn't need the whole driveshaft so I went online and found this kit on a different website. Now, their price was higher than Amazon so I continued to do some searching for the lowest price. Amazon had it for almost $50 less than the other website. Plus, it had free shipping. How could you go wrong. The item arrived within a week or so and it was put on my vehicle a few days after. Until then I was very happy with my purchase. Then, when my husband was underneath my vehicle taking care of another issue he noticed that the rubber boot was torn. I immediately called Amazon and explained the situation to them and unfortunately at the time the item wasn't in stock but, they told me to keep watching their website and when it was to call them and they would send me a replacement for the defective part. I checked their website the following day and they had a few in stock so I called them. The lady I spoke to was very nice and very understanding. She ordered me the part and shipped it with one day shipping. I am very happy with Amazon. They truly do stand behind their products. Thanks Again Amazon! I will definitely buy from your site again!
