  • THE STRENGTH OF MUSLIN: With many hop filtering bags on the market, it’s hard to figure out which ones to buy. Filters are a great method to extract hops when making homemade beer. Common materials include mesh, nylon, or muslin fabric. Muslin bags are the best of the three due to the durability, permeability, and stretchy disposition of the material. Normally 14”, our hop boiling bags extend up to 26” in length. It also holds up to 3 ounces of hop pellets and one pound of grain.
  • A NO-FUSS EXTRACTION METHOD: Whether you are using hop pellets, whole hops, or whole grains, it’s more convenient to use a filtering system than submerging them directly into the brew. Homebrew beer filters are ideal because you get the same extraction of flavors without worrying about the pellets or grain getting stuck in the homebrew equipment. Simply pull out your muslin bag when you’ve reached optimal flavor displacement. This method greatly diminishes the hassle of build-up and clean-up.
  • CUT BACK ON EXPENSES AND WASTE: At Cotton Millz, we’re firm believers in doing what we can to cut back on environmental waste. We encourage everyone to use our bags more than once to support our efforts to be eco-friendly. These muslin steeping grain socks are reusable and washable, so you can use them more than once without the bags losing their integrity or becoming ineffective. They are stain resistant and odor-free as well, so reusing a bag won’t influence the taste of your beer.
  • INCREASE SURFACE AREA FOR MORE TASTE: Extracting the flavor of hops is an integral part of the beer-making process. Used primarily as a flavoring and stability agent, hops impart bitter, zesty, and citric flavours, making the undertones of your craft come alive. You need to optimize surface area for your pellets to work properly. Our cotton bags are stretchy and porous which means you don’t need to worry about your hops or grain being confined, decreasing surface area and, ultimately, taste.
  • NOT JUST FOR BEER: While we created these home brewing supplies for craft beer enthusiasts, these muslin bags are incredibly versatile, lending themselves to all sorts of uses from loose leaf tea steeping to making herb sacks for soups and stews. These can be used as almond milk and juice bags as well. Muslin material is better than the ever-popular cheese cloth because it is stronger and more stretchy. Use the Cotton Millz easy-to-use bags for all sorts of projects and creations in the kitchen.

With craft beer being all the rage right now, it can be easy to get caught up in a all the noise surrounding ideal equipment, fermentation, materials, and extraction techniques. While there is not one “right” way to make beer, there are certainly better and easier methods than others. We agree that there are all kinds of flavors and types of brews and while taste is subjective, efficient and quality brewing methods aren’t. Research and trial and error have taught us that muslin hops and grains bags are superior to others on the market. They are resilient yet flexible, being able to stretch to twice their size. They are porous so you know you are making the most out of your hops pellets or grains and they are reusable so you can save money on purchasing equipment while also knowing you are doing right by mother nature. Sizes were perfect for several pounds of specialty malts and hop additions when I was brewing beer.

I received this and upon opening, I was very disappointed. The dimension of the bag is about 2 inches x 8 inches. They did not look like they were meant for retail sales. The "bags" come in a bundle of supposedly 100 that is tied together with a string. Most of the bags were in the bundles while others were loosely stuff into the shipping bag. It was supposed to be 100 but I counted only 90. If you're planning to use them all at once, then it'll probably work for you. For me, it doesn't fit my need.First of all, it comes stuffed into the shipping bag, no other packaging included. Of course, when it's shipped, the bag touches anything and everything, so it's not very clean. Once delivered, it lies in my yard to be covered in dust and whatever else might end up on the bag. In other word, I cannot keep these in the shipping bag for use later since the shipping bag got really dirty by the time I got it in my hand. I had to transfer the bags to my gallon zip loc bags. So the bags are already contaminated from coming out of the dirty bag, it'll now be contaminated by my hands which I had to remove from the dirty bag into another bag.I contacted the seller about the missing portion as well as the fact that the bags didn't come in it's own bag but only the shipping bag. The seller took no responsibility--blamed it on the manufacturer, saying that the item comes straight from the manufacturer so the missing portion as well as lack of any container is purely the manufacturer's fault. As a seller, you must know what you're selling and any condition the product will come in. If the item isn't up to par, then you must take responsibility. If you don't know what you're selling, then you shouldn't sell it.

I've been using these for dry hopping. They hold up well enough that I'm able to clean+boil them and reuse at least 2 times so far. So I expect a bag this size to last for a while.

I HATE washing hop bags when brewing. These are reasonably priced to use and throw away. We have dogs, hops are really realllly bad for dogs so I throw these right in the trash. AND I save a lot of clean up time.

I make beer so I use these for dry hopping - they work perfectly. Not only do they work, you get so many for such an awesome value that you don’t have to worry about throwing it away with each batch/use. That said, I’m sure you could wash and re-use them, but at this price, you may not want to waste the time. Will be buying more when/if I ever run out!

As a frequent home brewer, I have a need for a lot of these little muslin bags. I use them for hops, spices, and other ingredients added during the boil. At the price they're offered here, I can decide to dispose of them or re-use them as appropriate. They allow enough liquid to pass through that I've had no problem properly bittering and flavoring my beers, without leaving an unnecessary amount of sediment in the kettle.

Work as advertised. Their muslin bags. Stretch well, sewn well. Stretch enough to put 6 oz. of Pelletized hops into the boil with bag room to spare. (I haven't tried more yet)
