We have a large flatscreen TV in our bedroom mounted high up on the wall. In order to make things look “near”, I ran all of the cabling in a cable hide following the frame of our door. That power cable (ie. Long extension cord) is plugged into the wall which is behind our dresser (ie. Nearly impossible to easily get to) on one side, then a large power strip hung up on the backside of the TV (to keep everything looking neat and tidy). The only issue is that sometimes we need to “reboot” our TV (the “smart” features aren’t very “smart” and sometimes requires power cycling the TV to get the apps unfrozen). Our process in the past was to get a ladder and climb up so we can get access to the power button on the power strip located on the back of the TV. Very inconvenient! With this inline switch, I simply plugged the extension cord into one side and the power strip into the other, then ran the cable for the switch straight down (in another cable hide, of course!). The switch now sides next to the TV sound bar which is much more convenient to reach. So now when I need to power cycle the TV (or simply turn off the power like when we travel), I simply reach up and flip the switch! Very convenient indeed!I haven’t noticed any heat coming from the inline switch (at the switch part nor the outlet part) but then again our TV, sound bar and DVD/BluRay player do not consume that much power.Very convenient, I highly recommend for situations like ours!

Pros: I plugged this switch into a vacuum cleaner to draw some amperage and it worked fine without out getting hot or having any smells to it. The switch is pretty solid and has a firm 'click' when pushed. The switch has a light to indicate that it is on. The switch enclosure has two external tabs for mounting to the wall. The enclosure also has a gasket on the lid. The cord is pretty robust and may take a while to straighten out since it is coiled in the box. The plug is pretty plain and just substantial enough for about 15 amps, but probably not the 30 amps claimed by the advertisement.Cons: The switch housing is pretty lightweight. The cable grommet was a little loose on mine, though I was able to tighten it. I also believe that 30 amps is too high a rating for this unit. The wire and switch might be able to handle that, but I don't believe the plug will. I also feel like the entire orientation should be inverted. This would work well if your plug was at the top of the wall and the switch was down lower, but in most circumstances, the reverse would be true.

This product is working fine for me, remotely turning on something with modest power use and a switch of its own that’s out of reach, but don’t be confused by the headline that says 30A, 125V. That’s only for the switch, as I confirmed by opening the box (see photo), which shouldn’t be extended to represent the entire cord/plug system. The National Electric Code calls for a minimum of 10 AWG wire for a 3.3-foot run at 30 amps, and the supplied cord is 14 AWG (larger numbers are smaller diameters). If the application is high loads for long periods, 8 AWG would be better. The cord rating, also given in the listing, is for 20 amps, but that would call for 12 AWG, or 10 to be extra safe.So I’d proceed with caution with any high-powered appliance. Like many electrical products, this one hasn’t been tested by a third party like UL or ETL. I typically subtract a star for anything that plugs into household power that isn’t certified in this way.

These are handy switches to have on hand, especially for equipment without a switch or an inaccessible one. I already have one of a similar design of switch on my portable air compressor. The switch is located in the back of the unit and inaccessible under the workbench. It worked out perfectly, and I don't have to crawl under the bench any more to turn the compressor off. For a small shop these are great for adding a remote switch. It worked out so well that when this came up as an Amazon Vine item I ordered it. The 1 meter long cord and combination plug/ receptacle are of good quality, and the waterproof gasketed switch box is made of thick plastic. The switch is rated for 35 amps at 120 volts, and it's backlit so it's easy to see whether it's on or off. I opened it up to check before using it and found that the wire is nicely soldered to the switch terminals, not just with push on quick connect terminals. You'll never have these connections overheat. This is a high quality bit of kit that you'll find a lot of uses for. Considering the cost of having to permanently install a separate backlit switch and dedicated receptacle this is a cost effective solution that works well.

I now have roughly a dozen cords using this or very similar switches. I have them at my workbench, at stationary tool sites, used them long term for outdoor lights, and for temporary connections into my driveway and RV pad next to my garage. I use several of the DC version for exposed switching on my Jeep. All have stayed sealed against hours, and sometime days of wind driven rain. The switch is moderately large and be activated one handed even with heavy gloves on. I'm a huge fan of this style of switch. The piggyback cording is most useful when running outdoor cords. As my Jeep is too tall for my garage door, I have to work on it outdoors. The piggy back switch allows me to run a single HD extension cord to the vehicle, then add this connector to allow separate control of the lights from the power tools or soldering equipment. It is similarly handy at fixed equipment like belt sanders and drill presses where auxiliary lights in desirable. As for gauge, i find 14 gauge to be quite adequate for the short lengths involved. While 12 or even 10 can be desirable form a current capacity perspective, it is not so desirable when there is a need for flexibility--which can have a direct effect on keeping the cord plugged in.Overall, this is a great switch/cord set and well deserving of a 5 star ranking.
