I listened to an old Scoutmaster Podcast by Chet Greene and his guest expert on winter camping commented about it. So, I decided to get the small imperial pint-sized one for an upcoming klondike derby. I really liked it! It was cold, we were running a fire-starting station for the Scouts to demonstrate their fire-making skills, and we needed hot water. I could boil up water in a few minutes with twigs, bark, and tinder easily. The whistle stop is a great adjustment. The interior chimney does get sooty. For backpacking with friends, the size is fine since you are sharing the load and gear. I opted for the stainless steel version. I'm looking forward to future canoe/kayak trips to take this along. You can find fuel most anywhere and not limited to a can of gas. And when it gets really cold where propane camp stoves, pocket rockets, and the like aren't working well, this will (which is why I got it!).

I asked my husband how we would cook or boil water in case of an earthquake or other disaster. He had stored food and water, but I did some research and ordered the Kelly Kettle Trekker model. I had to order the little stove separately. In my opinion. They should be sold together, at least as an option. I love the design of the kettle and its practicality. You can heat water or food using twigs, wood chips or solid fuel pellets. Great for camping!

So far I’ve taken this on a backpacking overnight and a multi day cycling trip. It’s bigger than my other setups and somewhat heavier, but it’s cool not having to carry canisters or a bottle of denatured alcohol.Luckily it finally rained, would not have taken it when burn bans were on.The biggest drawback is smelling like wood smoke. And soot on pots when using the hobo stove or chimney pot holder. It’s messier than I like, but I’m a clean freak who hates being dirty so YMMV.Stopped a few times to have a brew up, as they say, and it was about as fast as my buddy’s alcohol stove to set up, boil and put up.Definitely going to go on more trips with me, have a thru hike of the Ozark Highlands Trail planned this winter and I’ll be taking it.

While it doesn't boil much, a pint or so at a time the space and weight make up for it in speed. Use the base since that is where you get your air flow. Once I used that we made hot drinks and water for soup for 4 people, so no one was waiting more than 4 minutes for water. So a large group can use this as well as a small group. A bit of a trick I came up with is your first boil use a bit larger stick, say marker size so there is a bed of coals once you get a boil.I used homemade cotton and wax fire starkers and they work fine. Use small sticks, and I mean small pencil size or less. They will boil water in a few minutes. Serve water, refill and add small sticks to your fire, blow gentle until you see flames, repeat if more water is needed. You can once done use the coals for a camp fire or simple let die. Just be careful to grab from the sides, since the flames and heat come right out the top. Watch videos of how to use this.It was worth getting and I am sure it will get a lot of us this winter for hot drinks in cold weather.

Love, love, love this product. Arrived early and exactly what I ordered. Aways wanted one of these. A great addition to trips where weight counts ( no hauling fuel) and where open fires are an issue. I ordered the trekker and it holds a surprising amount of water. I also bought the hobo stove cooking fire ring attachment which will be very useful but wish I had also bought the stabiliser to allow a bigger pot or frying pan to be used. The little pot that fits the trekker (Kelly Kettle Stainless Steel Small Cookset for Trekker) is likley to be a bit too small to be useful but will fit a ramon or other soup and will be a good emergency solo cooking setup. If the manufacturer is looking for feedback, a small light weight fire guard to put the fire base on, would add a measure of safety in wildfire prone areas.
