The LSI SAS 9211-8i Host Bus Adapter provides the greatest available throughput to internal Server storage arrays through eight internal 6Gb/s ports driving up to 256 SAS and SATA physical devices. This HBA offers dynamic SAS functionality including dual-port drive redundancy and SATA compatibility. Utilizing two internal x4 SFF8087 Mini-SAS connectors the low-profile SAS 9211-8i is an excellent fit for 1U and 2U servers. The SAS 9211-8i utilizes the embedded CPU in the LSISAS2008 controller to perform integrated RAID 0 1 1E and 10 operations for reliable data protection with high-availability. The result is an ultra-thin low-overhead device driver communicating over the x8 PCI Express 2.0 Host interface. By reducing RAID code overhead this HBA delivers high-speed READ/WRITE performance making it well suited for medium to high-capacity internal storage applications. I recommend upgrading the firmware as it got me a real performance boost.I got the SAS9211-8i as an upgrade for my Dell T7500 dual xeon workstation. I wanted to add a RAID1 of 2 SSD drives and take better advantage of a pair of SATA III 2TB Western Digtial RE drives. The specs and price place it at a kind of sweet spot for serious RAID controllers. This is not the more common "fake raid" or FRAID controllers which are a lot less expensive but are software raid with some hardware assist.I had first tried a as a less expensive alternative. After one of the drives was dropped offline I tried to replace it with a new one. But instead of rebuilding the array it ended up trashing the good drive. That experiment in cheap solutions over I turned back to LSI for a real RAID controller brand which has never failed me.My confidence in the LSI SAS RAID controllers based on years of experience with Dell PERC controllers that use LSI chip sets. This 6MBs controller was no disappointment. The updated firmware installed nicely and bios settled nicely beside the embedded older 3MBs LSI based Dell PERC controller without problems. The bios setup was easy and Windows 7 recognized the controller immediately. This card uses SFF 8087 connectors so it can service both SAS and SATA drives. I used 2 for my SAS drive connections. This was the perfect length for my Dell and have operated flawlessly.Performance has been very good and I've been very satisfied. I've come to rely on LSI components with confidence. For that peace of mind it gets 5 stars from me.

I got these to boost the speed of my HDD cluster, and it definitely did that. However, it has a pretty slow load time for the card bios while booting up. After it loads and gets into your OS, however, there was a notable speed increase on the SAS drives and it does function properly. I was impressed by the performance boost of using the SAS drives, but for the price, it might just be better to go solid state. All in all it is a good card.
