I have had a few desktop NAS devices by Synology before this one and have loved every one of them. Just like those this one does not disappoint. I maxed the memory, added the NVME adaptor and 2 SSD for cache and added a 10Gb fiber network adapter. The performance has been unquestionably top notch. Synology is doing their level best to push people into their overpriced branded hard drives. If you know what you’re looking for you can get better, higher capacity drives for less money. The drawback being that you’ll have a storage pool warning about incompatible drives that are working just fine. But wait…. There is a “fix” for this. Google is your friend and the collective user base out the supports each other better than any company would or even could. There is a script that you run (and schedule to run at startup) that simply moves your drives from the untested to the compatible list. Please note, it will not do this for drives that are on the incompatible list.I have always enjoyed the vast array of mostly free apps that run on synology devices available to install from their package center. It really adds value to their product. In summary I’m quite happy with the purchase and would purchase it again.

Why does Synology not support other major brands of hard drives anymore? SO ANNOYING! Are you really that desperate for money that you now only support one drive manufacturer? So incredibly disappointing. When a company does something like this it shows its current and future customers that it is more interested in squeezing every last cent out of it’s supply chain than actually providing the best options and choice for it’s customers. I hope this reflects as shortsighted as it is inconvenient for your customers.

It is hard to find compatible hardware for the Synology devices. They don't support lots of USB devices, hard drives, and more. I would recommend finding a NAS with better device support. Also, they have so many tricks to prevent honoring the warranty. Don't buy this expecting to have good support or warranty help. There are other devices out there so I would not choose Synology.

I was running out of space and instead of just buying more hard drives, I figured I might as well upgrade my system as well. I upgraded from the Synology 4 bay NAS DiskStation DS918+ to this RackStation RS1619xs+ for the win. Keep in mind this is a 19" deep and wide. So If you have a small rack, you might want to rethink this NAS. The other thing that might give you pause is that there is no support for SHR. Now that those are out of the way. Why should you upgrade to this NAS? There are a lot of NAS out there but Synology software always makes it an easy choice to select them for my storage needs. The intuitive interface and package are hard to beat. The hardware itself has an Intel Xeon D-1527 Quad-core. You can if you want to install a 10GbE/25GbE NIC. If you don't have a switch to support 10GbE, save your money, and get more ram instead. Speaking of ram, the RackStation RS1619xs+ supports up to 64 GB of it. So short story, long. I love this machine but wish it would not kill my eardrums. This is meant to be in an AV room and not in your livingroom. However pro users don't want to hear that. So while you buy this add a 3rd party fan to your shopping cart. You can thank me later.Pro:Synology DSN softwareFuture proof thanks to PCIe slotsThe pure power of the systemLink AggregationCons:19" deep and wide. May not fit in all racksThe fan noise is rediculous even when there is no load. The 39.3 dB not true on our test runs as 53.1 dBThere is no SHR support :(Does not come with Rail Kit

This thing has everything you need for storage. I did try contacting synology tech support for an issue adding additional drives. That was weeks ago and I still haven’t gotten a response that I am able to find. It was done through their online support. Thankfully, it ended up being an issue with the size of the drive I was adding. You can’t go smaller than what is already in place.Only real issue I have now is that the unit is too long for my rack. It looks like I may end up making a mount for it. As the racks it will work with as large and a bit costly. It might sit on my shelf until I muster up enough to switch out my current rack setup. The best part of this unit was upgrading from a small desktop synology NAS was a snap. Synology has great articles online to follow. I am thankful for the resources they provide to follow. They were good to work with swapping out my old unit under warranty.Overall, I am extremely pleased with this purchase. It makes reassuring me that my data won’t disappear without a trace with a failed hard drive. I have lost years of photos with my carelessness in the past.

Primary use is backing up 20 end user PCs. My Western Digital (WD) unit died and I needed something fast. Shipped immediately, purchased 5 WD Red Pro 6TB NAS Internal Hard Drive - 7200 RPM Class (one is a spare, trust me you want a spare on hand); I was up and running in minutes and fully operational in a couple hours.Easy to install, intuitive interface with good online help as needed. Using the included application, Active Backup for Business that implements data deduplication which conserves a huge amount of disk space. This is a great feature. Don't know why it isn't highlighted in the description.I'm sold on Synology!

I like the cpu power and memory capacity on this 4 drive model. But why no support for SHR and SHR-2. I ended up with RADI 6 but confused why no SHR which is one of the reasons I like Synology. I also have a DS1019+ and three DS918+ all with SHR and SHR-2 support so why not on this high end unit.
