The Prairie Chiminea is a traditional outdoor fireplace with minimalist design. The large mouth opening projects light and heat, taking the edge off a chilly night or just provides ambience on a warm summer night. The Prairie chiminea has all the features you are looking for in a quality Blue Rooster chiminea. With its plain design that is flat as a prairie, it is the perfect fireplace without the frills. As a gift, it is the one present that will not be returned.

We introduced the first Prairie chiminea way back in 2007. Before the Prairie, most chimineas included designs on the neck and body. We heard from many couples that they couldn’t find a design they both liked, so we decided to make a chiminea without a decorative design, something that everyone could agree on – a minimalist design of a traditional chiminea.

Since 1997 The Blue Rooster's mission has been to design/manufacture the best chimineas available for people to enjoy their time together outdoors. Our commitment to customers has earned us your trust and respect. We also carry a full line of replacement parts if the unexpected happens.

FAQ's

How do chimineas compare to fire pits?

A fire pit is classified as a “Recreational Fire”, much like a ring of rocks, whereas a enclosed chiminea is classified as a “Outdoor Portable Fireplace”. Blue Rooster chimineas may also be classified as “Cooking Devices” due to the cooking grates and enclosed design. There are many fire pits incorrectly advertised as chimineas. They have mesh wraparounds, multi openings, and faux chimneys that only funnel smoke and have no effect on the fire. Due to lack of proper engineering, a mislabeled fire pit will never draft properly. Fire pits have a tendency to be hard to light and smoke/smolder due to not having proper drafting. Fire pits also have safety concerns regarding the possibility of a sudden gust of wind blowing embers into dry grass, deck, or a neighbor’s property.

Where to use it?

A properly designed chiminea with mouth screen is considered an enclosed burning device. Often, they can be used where open fires are not allowed. They also classify as cooking devices with the grate inserts and should be allowed wherever a gas grill is accepted.

Maintenance?

Just like a car that needs an oil change now and then, a chiminea requires occasional ash clean out to keep it burning clean.

  • Easy to light
  • Low smoke
  • Burns bright, hot and clean
  • Easy grill access
  • Emergency heat source
  • Stable design
  • Long lasting and portable

What color chiminea is the best?

Most wood burning chiminea buyers stick with the charcoal color since the soot and ash buildup turns a colored chiminea charcoal. The effects of sun and weather will also wear down the factory paint over time and high temperature firings eventually darken colored chimineas. BBQ spray paint is a quick fix for regular maintenance of cast iron, steel and cast aluminum parts.

The Blue Rooster chimineas all start with 3 layers of high temp charcoal (black) fireplace paint. The color finishes are then applied to create a patina finish. High temp spray paint is available at your local home store or hardware store in a variety of colors. High temp spray paint can be applied in just a few minutes and will keep your chiminea looking brand new.

Should I place something under my chiminea?

We recommend using a deck protector hearth pad. A chiminea does not direct much heat downward, but the occasional ember or ash will happen with any fire. For a more permanent pad use cement blocks or pavers available at any local outdoor garden store. Four 18x18 patio blocks make a three-foot hearth pad that works great to protect your surface from an ember or stray ash.

How long do Blue Rooster Chimineas last?

With proper use and maintenance our chimineas will last for many years. Blue Rooster has made metal chimineas for over 20 years and most are still in use.

Easy to put together, this chimenea is nice, good quality and has protective gate to keep wood from falling out. Looks great in back yard.

Solid chimnea. Only problem is flimsy screen door that has gaps when fully closed.

Awesome.Sits on our rooftop patio. Alongside a gazebo. We don't need to spend money on vacations.... just get some wood, some wine and do a staycation.Good things... it comes in a smaller box than expected and it was easy to handle.Planned update: I'm going to use metal thumbscrews to hold the top to the base. I doubt I'll use it for BBQ, but is I did, I don't want to go downstairs to grab a screw driver. We're quite happy with it. The only problem now is that my wife wants to join me upstairs instead of watching Netflix downstairs. So my cigar smoking time is not so private...

Review after 2 weeks and three small fires as recommended by the manufacturer.I'm personally very disappointed in this purchase considering it wasn't exactly cheap. From what I've seen so far the aluminum casting seems like it will hold up. However, details leave a lot to be desired.1) The second pictures shows that while sturdy legs are supplied, the entire weight bears on only the end of 3 corners (green circles). The red circles show the rest of the 3 legs are elevated off the ground (the issue isn't the deck as it was assembled on a flat kitchen LVP floor and showed the same issue). This will likely ultimately damage the deck and I'm concerned about overall stability of the chiminea.2) It is a little tough to see from the first picture but unit looks misshaped. This is because of how the handle holes were drilled. Picture 3 has two identically sized rectangles. The left handle is either too far front or the right is too far back compared to the alignment of the front opening.Point 2 is aesthetics and will drive me nuts but it goes along with point 1 in that there is no attention to detail here and that makes me very concerned about the longevity of the overall piece. I work in manufacturing, it's not hard to build a jig so that the holes for the feet and handles can be drilled in the correct location for each mass produced piece. I don't know if this is a China factory issue or is the final drilling/assembly is done in Minnesota. Regardless this is poor craftsmanship which lends me to doubt the overall manufacturing quality of the chiminea.

Some of the reviews talk about smoke being an issue. Ignore them. This thing rocks. It's so easy to get a fire going in it and as soon as you have a good hot fire (and you are burning seasoned wood) this thing will burn hot and virtually smoke free. It kicks off quite a bit of heat. And the product is high quality and should last for as long as you wish to own it.

I purchased the Blue Rooster Prairie Chiminea as a gift for my daughter’s family. They absolutely love it! The fire box is large and shows a beautiful flame. Throws off quite a bit of heat too. Beautifully made, wonderful product!! Highly recommend this!

These things are sturdy and keep the smoke out of your face. Only good for one or two people snuggling up to the open face, but works perfect for my purposes. Efficient burn as well, and reduces my usage of wood for fuel considerably.

It is expensive, but it is a very nice chiminea. I was hesitant to make the purchase, because of the price, but I am really glad I bought it. I've had several chances to use it and it works great. Be mindful that if the logs are longer than about 16", they may not fit inside very well. I am going to buy a little electric chain saw to cut the longer logs that I have, so they fit better. That is the only issue I have had. I recommend this chiminea whole heartedly, and it sure makes for some great fireside conversations on cool evenings.
