FAQ's

How do chimineas compare to fire pits?

A fire pit is classified as a “Recreational Fire”, much like a ring of rocks, whereas a enclosed chiminea is classified as a “Outdoor Portable Fireplace”. Blue Rooster chimineas may also be classified as “Cooking Devices” due to the cooking grates and enclosed design. There are many fire pits incorrectly advertised as chimineas. They have mesh wraparounds, multi openings, and faux chimneys that only funnel smoke and have no effect on the fire. Due to lack of proper engineering, a mislabeled fire pit will never draft properly. Fire pits have a tendency to be hard to light and smoke/smolder due to not having proper drafting. Fire pits also have safety concerns regarding the possibility of a sudden gust of wind blowing embers into dry grass, deck, or a neighbor’s property.

Where to use it?

A properly designed chiminea with mouth screen is considered an enclosed burning device. Often, they can be used where open fires are not allowed. They also classify as cooking devices with the grate inserts and should be allowed wherever a gas grill is accepted.

Maintenance?

Just like a car that needs an oil change now and then, a chiminea requires occasional ash clean out to keep it burning clean.

  • Easy to light
  • Low smoke
  • Burns bright, hot and clean
  • Easy grill access
  • Emergency heat source
  • Stable design
  • Long lasting and portable

What color chiminea is the best?

Most wood burning chiminea buyers stick with the charcoal color since the soot and ash buildup turns a colored chiminea charcoal. The effects of sun and weather will also wear down the factory paint over time and high temperature firings eventually darken colored chimineas. BBQ spray paint is a quick fix for regular maintenance of cast iron, steel and cast aluminum parts.

The Blue Rooster chimineas all start with 3 layers of high temp charcoal (black) fireplace paint. The color finishes are then applied to create a patina finish. High temp spray paint is available at your local home store or hardware store in a variety of colors. High temp spray paint can be applied in just a few minutes and will keep your chiminea looking brand new.

Should I place something under my chiminea?

We recommend using a deck protector hearth pad. A chiminea does not direct much heat downward, but the occasional ember or ash will happen with any fire. For a more permanent pad use cement blocks or pavers available at any local outdoor garden store. Four 18x18 patio blocks make a three-foot hearth pad that works great to protect your surface from an ember or stray ash.

How long do Blue Rooster Chimineas last?

With proper use and maintenance our chimineas will last for many years. Blue Rooster has made metal chimineas for over 20 years and most are still in use.

After looking at several different chiminea options, we loved the reviews on this one. I was hesitant because of the higher price, but we figured buy it right the 1st time or spend just as much on the cheap one that will need to be replaced sooner. I'm so glad we went with this! It's absolutely beautiful in our space and is just the right amount of heat. If you're on the fence, this is totally worth it!

After 16 years, my clay chiminea finally had to be put down. So I thought I’d invest in a chiminea that would be my last. Wrong.I’ll admit that it takes a lot to impress me and little to disappoint me. But this chiminea offers a lot to disappoint. If anything's good about the Blue Rooster, it's been said in earlier reviews. Here’s what’s not good about the Blue Rooster:[1] The feet get hot, very hot. Don’t place them on anything where protecting the appearance of the supporting surface is important. For me that means I can’t place it directly on my stamped concrete patio let alone non-marring hard rubber blocks.[2] The fire box opening is too low for “hypnotic” viewing within 20 feet. That’s how far I had to sit to ‘see it all’.[3] because the grates elevate the coal bed too high [to even with the door’s opening], there’s poor coal development and a lot of sparks are thrown out the front door, again not good for my sealed stamped concrete patio; the flimsy screen helps a bit, but significantly dampens the fire.[4] it doesn’t throw much, if any heat; seems all the heat goes into keeping the aluminum warm and, surprisingly, that doesn’t seem to radiate much if any heat; after 4 hours of burning oak, cherry, and birch, the screen is cool to the touch … you can easily lay your hand on it, not so for the back side of the chiminea. There’s more, but that should be enough for you to think twice before you make the same mistake I did.So, what am I going to try to salvage my chiminea experience [and my significant investment]?[1] First, I’m going to buy another clay chiminea before they’re gone for the season.[2] I’m going to remove the grates and, instead, fill the bottom with 2” of lava rock in an attempt to lower the coal bed. My concern is … what material is the screw-on base made from?[3] I’m going to raise the chiminea by at least six inches; first I’ll try the steel cradle base I’d be using for the clay chiminea and, if that’s not enough, rest those legs on the most attractive “dobie blocks” I can find. I need to sit closer than 20’ to enjoy the fire with my friends.[4] Because of [3], I’ll probably need to remove the legs which I see as a good thing since those low, six thru-holes will allow more drafting.Summary. Buy a clay chiminea. They’re less expensive and better performing.

I wasn't happy with the price, but it's by far the best on the market now. The cast aluminum should last forever.
