The D string is defective. When I play it close to the fingerboard the tone is bad and it goes out of tune.

The top three strings are the best I've ever had on my instrument - hands down. Very balanced, strong but pleasing sound. The C string, unfortunately, seems quite subdued on my cello, not matching the timbre of the top 3. Substituting a Permanent Soloist C made for a much better match - quite good actually.
