I was looking for 5B sticks that were cheaper than Vic Firth. Promark is all caught up in forward or rebound gimmicks. These felt balanced, nice shoulder and tip to them and more affordable than the others.

Vater has been making high-quality drumsticks for many years now. These 5Bs do not disappoint. Bearing in mind that drumsticks are as personal as gloves and shoes as related to good feel, these 5Bs are a good choice if a moderately heavier stick is desired, or for light concert-type work. If they work for you, they're well worth having and enjoying their use.

I found these sticks are weighted well and hold up to a beating for quite a while. They aren't overly heavy and are thick enough to feel good and balanced in the hand.My only gripe is these things chip away into saw dust like noone's business. I get that they're wood and all sticks do this but good lord...

I bought a four pack of these at Guitar Center maybe five or six years ago. It wasn't until now that I needed to replace them, and that wasn't because any of them actually broke (unlike more expensive brands I've used.) It was because they were still playable but very worn out after years of use. They feel great. They play great, and the price is very affordable. What more can you ask for in a stick? I've only played the 5BN model so I can't vouch for the quality of others, but these have served me EXTREMELY well.

I switched to Vater in the 90s for their high quality, and probably used them before when I was using Zildjian sticks, because Vater was making them as well. I received a shipment of Vater 5Bs from Amazon yesterday and got the first warped stick I remember with a Vater stamp. Odds are it left the factory straight and warped afterward, since their quality control is very high, but wood is wood and these things can happen despite all. Amazon doesn't have a mechanism to replace one stick or part of an order, so I called Vater just to see if there was any way at all to get one warped stick replaced. Much to my surprise, the phone was answered by Alan Vater, and he was only too happy to send not one stick, but a matched pair as a replacement at no cost to me. Beyond that, it was nice to talk to one of the brothers behind my favorite sticks for nearly half my life. It was a very cool and unusual customer service experience that reinforced the loyalty I've had to the brand all these decades.

Vater 3A Nylon tips are my go to sticks with my metal style of play. They are slightly heavy to give power and well balanced to add versatility with dynamics. I've been using them for about 20 years, and really like the feel of them. I've tried a number of different styles and types but always go back to these. The nylon tips are nice on the ride, to ping out every note with its ball type shape. The sticks are a little shorter than the 5A/B's, which are very popular but never really liked the tips on them. The shorter stick, in my opinion, gives better control and has a quick feel dispite the heavy weight.I know a handful of metal drummers that use these and when they switched to them, they really liked them a lot, and dumped their old sticks.

Ok... giving a little background: I have always been using 5B's. I tried the Vic Firth AH5B which is Maple... cause Hickory was too heavy for my taste, and they tend to chip the tip... which I hate... and my hads did not felt that fast for me. Quite good for Rock and such, but when I needed to play something a little bit more versatile I couldn't make it. Specially Jazz or something lighter. That's why I tried Maple 5B's... but the thing is that I haven't enough weight to play a more straight Rock 'nroll situation (only jazz, or soft fusion).I looked for Vater, interested in the 3a's... because I wanted the fat and full broad taper with short neck on the stick... but with less weight... But Did not like the way the tip sounded on cymbals. So then, I found this Sugar Maple Power 5B's... and Oh man... All in my musical and drumming Life is finally in it's right place!First of All: The TipIt is a mix between a very sofisticated rounded Barrel and a ball... something I can't describe that good, except for the sound. It sounds crispy, and high def pitch... articulated and brings a lot of reflex. The Taper is not fat, and the neck is kinda Short, in relation with the lenght of the stick. The Lenght.I needed more reach because I wanted to play holding in the butt/base of the stick, but in tradicional 5B's had problems with Hickory (way heavy) and Maple (way loose and light). With this drumstick I can hold 1/8 before and grip just a little bit above the Vater Logo, and have perfect (BUT I MEAN, REALLY PERFECTION!) balance and reflex... I feel heavy enough to make staccato fills... and light enough to make soft strokes. The Tip gives a great Jazz Cymbal Sound... and the thin taper right at the end of the short neck gives great Hi hat crisp chunky sound.I highly recommend this! If you have big Hands... and wanna play between the spectrum of Heavy Rock, Punk, through Pop, Balad, Classic Rock... To Jazz and latin afro cuban music... this is for you my man!A Long Stick, with PERFECT balance... and Beefy grip with simultaneously light reflex with enough heaviness.(By the Way... Maple never chips, specially with tips. People complains about maple saying that it Breaks easily. That's not true... it's all about how you play. Sometimes I play Heavy Prog Rock kinda like Tool... or Animals as leaders kind of heavy hitter stuff... and I had never break a Stick in 15 years.)
