If youâre using pine or something else it probably works fine but for oak and madrone not so much.

They did not work well for splitting the wood I have. The wood was dry and has cured for 2 years.

Let me start by saying this: the product works. Itâs heavy duty and solidly built, hasnât warped or broken, and does exactly what itâs designed to do. That said, BE WARNED: this tool requires proper technique, respect, and a bit of muscle to use safely and effectively. While the promo videos make it look simple and effortless, thatâs not entirely the case. If youâre planning to use this tool, there are a few important things to know upfront.Iâve been using a cordless hammer drill with a lot of torque (which I highly recommend), and even then, this tool can be trickyâand potentially dangerousâif youâre unprepared or distracted. Iâve worked with somewhat green wood, a mix of hard and soft varieties, and even as a fairly rugged, middle-aged guy, there are moments when I struggle to keep the drill under control. If the wedge binds in the wood (which can happen even at low speeds (also recommended for higher torque and safety), it can twist violently and try to wrench the drill right out of your hands.Tips for Safer Use:Both hands on the drill: One applies downward force, the other stabilizes and operates the drill.Secure the wood: I wedge the piece firmly between my feet.Brace the drill: I place the butt of the drill handle behind my right calf or extra stability.Work with cured or mostly dried wood for better results.Stick to splitting smaller pieces of wood to reduce strain. To minimize binding, drill at the ends of the wood, no more than 2-3" in, not the center. If the wedge does bind (and it often will if you drill into the center of a piece), itâs not just dangerousâit can be a hassle to free. Even with these precautions, the tool can occasionally spin the drill or the wood unexpectedly.Final Thoughts:This is a powerful and effective tool if you use it correctly. However, itâs not foolproof, and it definitely demands caution and respect. If youâre not ready to handle the force this tool generates, it might not be the best fit for you. But if you take the time to learn proper techniques and follow the tips above, itâs a great addition to your toolbox. I hope this helps, and stay safe!

Overall the intent of the tool is there. But once it gets stuck there is no reversing. The chuck comes out. Finding that it works best on dried out wood vs fresh cut wood.

I was skeptical when I bought it. Sure enough it did not deliver. It kept getting stuck on the log. It requires a heavy duty drill for it to work. Will only work on soft wood. Youâll only be able to generate kindling, forget splitting large pieces.
