I bought two of these- both shattered after about an hour of use.

It looks nice, ID and OD fit tools and gun nicely. However, after reading more than a couple reviews about it breaking, I am concerned and will probably anneal it, as others have done. I have a rockwell hardness tester, but think that, because I can only test it on a thin hollow area, the part would flex and make it inaccurate. I did drop it from about 1 inch onto my granite surface plate. This sounds silly, but it is very bouncy. Only hard steel bounces well on a hard surface...a nail, cheap washer, or piece of silverware would hardly bounce. I think it is really hard. I don't really know why they would bother to intentionally do that, and make it susceptible to cracking. The hammer piston strikes the end of the tool, not this adapter, so it doesn't help with that. In between each hammer blow, the barrel of the gun hits the flange of this adapter, which hits the tool. Apparently that breaks this adapter. Anyway, I'm going to soften it up a little. It kind of looks like a nice investment casting or compressed sintered powdered metal. Doesn't look machined from billet..seems like cheaper, softer steel would have made for a better product. By the way, I got it to use in an Astro 498k, so, if it is prone to breakage, it probably will. Update 08dec2023...I did anneal this before using, and used afterwards with the Astro 498k. It didn't break. I have the Astro, a Sunex 243, a Craftsman from about 1990, and an aircraft rivet driver,, and a lot of chisels, punches,, smoothing hammers,, rivet sets... Many of the radii on all these air hammers,, and on the tools are different,, so the radii on this adapter cannot match them all.. maybe it matches some,, maybe none.. this isn't the fault of the adapter, there doesn't seem to be good adherence to any standard. But, if the adapter doesn't match the air hammer, or the tools, it is very likely to break if it is hardened. Maybe it will in a more annealed, malleable state.

This product worked good but it needs to beannealing, if not it breaks apart after a few uses.

Heat treated one and it lasted about 4 uses, one I did not temper... shattered immediately on first use. If you have a big nasty... get the bits for it.

These are just like the ones from Aircraft Tool Supply. They are way too hard and need 'normalizing' before use. Heat them until red and let them air cool. I have not had an issue since doing this.

I was excited when I first found out about these adapters. Finding long hammerhead .498 type bits for my cp717 is next to impossible but with this adapter I can use my standard .401 bits. The concept is great but these adapters just can't take the pounding from "big nasty " style air hammers. I did get 2 or 3 uses out of this adapter before it shattered to pieces!
