I've used CatEye biking computers for years on several different bikes, so I was familiar with the basic setup. But for the Velo 9 I found the mostly illustrated instructions confusing, because I wanted to specify the exact circumference of my tires to get accurate distance readings. And I didn't care to measure this manually. I might have chosen 700c but looking carefully I saw that this could give (an unspecified) difference from my own tire circumference. The solution was to choose the 205 option (which is a choice for circumference) and then increment this number the the one indicated in the table of various sizes. So following the illustrations I incremented the number (first units, then tens) to the size indicated in the table for 700-38c tires, which is 218. Pressing and holding the mode button completed the choice for size. From there everything was familiar except my installation which was different from typical, in which the magnet and sensor are mounted on a front wheel. I am using the Velo 9 on a bicycle attached to a trainer so I wanted to measure revolutions of the rear wheel. The wire from the sensor to the display is too short to reach the handlebars, but luckily my bike, a Schwinn CrissCross, has a step-through top tube that is lower than the typical male bike and the wire does reach from the rear to near the front of the top tube. One question I had about choosing the CatEye Velo 9 was what is the difference between Velo 7 and Velo 9? The answer was on the second page of the setup instructions - Velo 9 is identical except that it can calculate Calories and Carbon Offset (CO2). If I had known this I would have opted for the slightly cheaper Velo 7. I had not seen a list of differences anywhere else.I am pleased with my setup and with the displays of the Velo 9. It works well for me.

Yes. This is a great product. But you have to wade through confusing instructions. They use pictures instead of words in a couple of places and I found myself having to redo some of the steps. Oh well. Know your exact tire size before starting. If you mount this to your handle bars, you will have to place the sensor on the front tire as the wire is too short to run to the back tire. That means you can't use this on an indoor trainer to track your miles. It's accurate. My Garmin 35 GPS said I did 20 miles and this was only one tenth of a mile different. Great!!

Low cost to acquire. Known name brand. Proven to work. It's not wireless, its not GPS, it doesn't sync to your phone or the internet and it doesn't have all the bells and whistles. If you are looking for something basic and proven to work, if you don't mind it being the older wired to the sensor style, it's a solid unit. Meets my needs for total miles odometer, miles today, average speed, duration of ride and time. Because it's not wireless needs only one low cost battery (first one is included). If you are looking for the basics in proven brand then I recommend, if you need the cutting edge you are gonna pay more and possibly introduce some complications and glitches.

I wanted a small trip computer to keep track of my mileage mostly when riding for exercise. This unit is easy to install, took a few minutes to change the type of measurements with a large paper clip (km or miles, date/time, and tire size). The unit can be removed from holder if you need to leave your bike outside unattended. Not sure how water proof/resistant the unit will be; but, we only get 1-3 inches of rain a year in the southwest. The display is easy to read in bright sunlight. Not planning to ride at night, so I did not need a computer with a back light feature. I did have to adjust the angle a little because my polarized sunglasses darken the display a little bit.The unit takes a single CR2032 battery and the manual said it should last up to 3 years. The unit turns on automatically once you start turning the front wheels and it goes into power-save mode after 10 minutes of no movement (still displays time on LCD 24/7 in power-save mode). You can reset all measurements pressing and holding the front mode button except the total distance. You have to use a paper clip and wipe the entire unit to factory specs if you need to reset the total distance. The Velo 9 has:Elapsed time: 0:00.00 - 9:58.59Trip Distance: 0.00 - 999.99 km or milesAverage Speed: 0.0 - 199.9 km or 0.0 - 124.9 mphMax Speed: 0.0 - 199.9 km or 0.0 - 124.9 mphCalorie Consumption: 0 - 99999 kcal (no way to adjust for body type)CO2 Carbon Offset: 0.00 - 999.99 kgODO Total Distance: 0 - 99999 km or milesClock 12hr or 24hrThere is no way to adjust the calorie consumption for body size, age, weight, height, terrain, bike weight, etc... The Velo 7 will give you exactly the same features with calorie and CO2 features deleted. I only got the Velo 9 because it was only a few bucks more and I thought the calorie counter would be more accurate. Calorie counter is usually reads too low by 3-4 times compared to on-line calorie calculators. Still give it 5 stars because it does exactly what I purchased it for with accurate speed and distance measurements.
