Polyester felt is nominally rated. The fabric is singed to prevent breaking of fibers during filtering. Polyester felt is not as easy to clean as mesh but can still be cleaned. Generally, this felt is meant to be thrown away after it is clogged. Polyester has an excellent rating with water, vegetable oils from animals and plants, petro-oils, organic solvents and micro-organisms. Polyester has a good rating with alkalis, organic acids, mineral acids and oxidizing acids.

I "harvest" rainwater for cooking and drinking. So, it's a strictly small time operation. I go through several stages of filtering so as not to clog the filters. First is through Duda's 25 micron filter (fits over a 5 gal bucket), then through a 1 micron "sock" then this .5 micron flat sheet cut to fit inside the filter that goes over the bucket. Then, filtered through a Lifestraw "Family 1.0", and finally through a standard Brita filter. For straight drinking and cold drinks I take the additional step of boiling.Sounds extensive and time consuming but the first two steps are quick, seconds to minutes. It slows down with this .5 micron filter and the Lifestraw filter in that order. Boiling is of no consequence as I only do a ½ gallon or two a month. Payback comes in a huge improvement in the flavor of any drink or food you can think of that requires water. I now make the best coffee!!Bottom line is this filter is filtering, even after the 1 micron sock!!!

I use a 6"x6" square of this material for a backpacking water prefilter when I have to pull drinking water from dirty water sources. .5 microns is small enough to filter out sediment and a good percentage of soluble clay that adds turbidity to water. I use this sheet to prefilter before running my drinking water through my Sawyer Squeeze. It saves the Sawyer from prematurely clogging and requiring as many backflushes.Great stuff, and enough to last for years. I shared some with some other hikers and they loved it.

Item was listed as new. It wasn't. The item's bag was ripped open and foreign materials were even inside of it. I plan on using this as a fluid filtering medium. This is not acceptable.
