Great HiFi player with a few caveats. After two weeks of fairly extensive use I am pretty familiar with the good and not so good. On the good side, fidelity on LDAC files is amazing even through normal AAC bluetooth connections. It seems to do a better end-to-end job than my Galaxy 23 or PC in getting music out with really low distortion (particularly found in high dynamic string sections). I use Media Monkey to manage a library of about 35K tracks and I was able to load and use my full 90 Gb library on a 128 Gb microSD without issue. Unbalanced output capable of fairly high levels. Did not check balanced outputs yet.I like the organization keeping audio controls on one side and power/device controls on the other. Very clean and easy to use.Screen is super clear and I find even small print quite legible.Battery life is excellent - easily making the 12 hours quoted. On the not so good - the APTX bluetooth connection does not seem to work with the one set of earbuds that have that capability; it does connect but when starting music it abruptly terminates the connection, so for any reasonable operation I have to use AAC. As to whether this is due to the Bose earbuds or this unit is impossible to determine at this point; both are Snapdragon certified so it is hard to understand. Also there are times (usually on first start up) that it will only play the first 8 seconds of the track then go quiet (while player continues to play). Skipping to next track gives the same behavior. If I then go back a track the playback usually becomes normal. Another odd stack behavior can occur with a pulsed dropout or with 2X or 4X normal speed playback. I don't yet know what the exact sequence is that causes this but they can be cleared by stopping the track and restarting. Thankfully this is a rare occurrance.Unfortunately the basic Android 13 functionality seems to not work as expected. Setting the sleep or power down to 10 minutes doesn't work when I set the sleep timer for the music. Once the music stops my Galaxy phone will go to sleep but this unit will not - it is still very much on when I get up in the morning. I have some other trials that may sidestep this issue,Overall a 4+ unit with excellent fidelity and some minor software bugs which hopefully will be corrected in future releases of the brand new unit.UPDATE: After buying a new APTx dongle for my stereo I find that the player automatically connects correctly, which indicates the problem is with my Bose earbuds not the player! Given that correction I increase my rating back to 5 star!!

This is my new go-to DAP over Samsung which is a very capable play and my Samsung note phone which is also pretty good, but also my HiBy R6GIII v2 (just references I know they're not top of the line). The sound at first is kinda sharp and uncontrolled but it smoother and balanced to fault almost. But then it is nearly perfect. It is quite fast, I'm sure it depends on the type and speed of your internet, but I love the functionality over my HIBy and it's nothing like anything android I've used. It's got me anxious to try out Apple music on it basic the Hiby never shows any change in music quality on the upper right status of it. So I'm curious about trying the different formats of streaming on it again. Different levels of recordings do sound very much better or worse than another where they weren't as clear on the Hiby strangely for such an expensive DAP. I just love listening to music on this now and wish I would have bought Fiio sooner other than just their headphone amps which I always thought were simply amazing. The design of this is gorgeous and seems simple all at once because it is so light. The storage capacity internally is fine I think. The battery is the only thing that I wish were larger not because of longevity between charges but because of voltage and handling demands of some headphones and power needs. This is some times needing to be maxed by iems and it is a little weak.A very great and capable DAP with the right 'phones. So match wisely.Thank you so much.

I like this thing so far. I use this for my home stereo instead of my Sony NW-a105. This is a bit bigger, which is nice. About an inch shorter than a smart phone, and a bit thicker. Very solid feeling, too. It doesn't feel frail at all. Just a few niggles that keep it from being a 5 star player for me. There are buttons on both sides. I would prefer them to be on the right side, however. The biggest problem by far is that there is NO manual for this. Nothing in the box, nor online. The quick start guide is absolutely worthless. Putting music on this thing was a challenge, as well. I think Fiio just thought, "Oh, they'll figure it out on their own." 🙄 Another big issue has popped up a few times, particularly with the album Invincible Shield by Judas Priest. Numerous tracks that I put on are WAY too long. Some by around 4 minutes. That means there is about 4 minutes of silence before the next track starts. This occurred on another album, too. I have tried deleting it and copying it back on the device to no avail. Strange and frustrating. It does sound very good, and the equalizer is a big plus. Many presets you can use, and a couple options for custom ones. The Sony DAP Walkmans are a better choice, IMO. I do NOT do streaming. I use it to put my own music on it, FYI.

Loving it so far. My wife calls it my "Zune". Great piece of kit to have on the road, at work, for sleeping or using the SPDIF connection at the home office. I like having a separate music player for my collection that's not my phone and the size is perfect. Screen could be better, but for the price it's touch responsive and intuitive. Very functional.

I have rated this device at 3 stars not in order to imply that it is mediocre but only that it does not fulfil my personal expectations for a DAP. A few years ago I owned and enjoyed a FiiO DAP and based on that experience I had high expectations of this device I terms of usability. Only some of which were met as I try to explain here.Press reviews of the JM21 are generally positive about the build quality and, of course, the sound which at this price point is very good indeed. It is a nicely produced device that feels good in the hand, has a solid, slightly weighty feel to it and two headphone outputs (although I don't have balanced 4.4 headphones so couldn't sample this aspect). In addition, a very nice, thoughtful production detail is that it arrives with a fitted, clear silicone backside case and fitted screen protector. What's not to like. But, while admiring almost everything about this device and, bottom line, the sound output is terrific, I found much to disappoint me in the user interface. This feels too complex, occasionally confusing, awkward to navigate, and generally seems over featured (for example I have no need for a VU meter). Too often I could not easily backup to the choice point I was at beforehand so got lost or arrived at a choice that was unexpected. For me, in regular use a good DAP should provide simple and reliable methods for locating tracks, albums, etc. and going on my experience with the early model FiiO that I once owned that is what I expected here.I have spent quite a few hours uploading files, trying out the various functions, editing metatags etc. to help with file organisation but I have come to the conclusion that the interface for managing music files is it weakest feature if, like me, you want good quality sound with a straightforward play-me-this-music-now interface. Other devices on the do this although the price point of the JM21 is a key, and important, selling feature. Also, this is a device based on Android so some of the features that you will find here look like more mainstream computing resources and some users may well find these useful (e.g. the ‘safe’ folder) and because it has WiFi internet updates are routinely notified.Having said all this I do not want to diminish the quality of this device. It is great and for the money you are getting a device that will play your music to a quality level that may cost at least a hundred pounds more (assuming you are using a high quality file format in the first place). It would certainly suite users who really want to drill into some of the subtleties of managing music files … and for whom a VU meter might be a useful tool! In other words this is a device that would please that school of users known as audiophiles, an audience that is FiiO’s main focus these days.Note: (i) I have no comment about battery life. It lasted quite well while I was using it. Some reviewers have reported that it does not last as long as specified, but of course there are many usage variables at play for battery usage. (ii) My comments are mainly based on the use of the Pure Music Mode. Android Mode also provides playback tools. (iii) Online help for the device (what we used to call a User Manual!) seems limited.
