If you like pea hearted tools buy this saw. My old Makita chop saw stood by me for 20 years. It was a great tool. This rascal was gutless from the get go and went down hill from there. With smoke billowing out of it the other day and throwing the 20 amp breaker I gave it an unceremonious burial in my trash can. At best it was just slightly better than a hacksaw. It lasted a little over a year . I have plenty of Makita tools which I like but this was a total disappointment. I am hoping for better luck with the DeWalt.

I ordered this saw when the armature burned out on my 20 year + old one. When I realized the parts to fix were going to approach the price of this one, I just ordered it. I received it in short time and it seems as good as the older model. Chop saw is a must for the farm and I would recommend Makita because their blades cut better than any I have used. Thanks to all involved.

This is a decent quality Makita tool and it performs fine within the limits of abrasive cutting. Stick with quarter inch bar and angle stock, half inch square and round and you will be happy. Larger stock will have you watching sparks for a long time. If you have to make a lot of angle changes on the vice and backing plate you will be cursing the design that requires two bolts to be loosened and the poorly marked angle marks - a tooless design would be a vast improvement. This is a good tool if you only cut small stuff or if you aren't making a lot of cuts. If I had it to do again I would spend the $400 for a cold saw.

Happiness is a well-chopped piece of steel. That's precisely what this does--cut steel magnificently. It'll cut anything else too--it's a giant abrasive blade, what's going to stop it?! Of course, don't just do that. Fires and stuff. Anyway, this is standard Makita fare--it's pretty lovely all over. The base is sturdy, the carry handle is comfortable, the whole thing feels well-balanced when you're carrying it, but most importantly it just works really, really well. All the materials are nice, the finish on the blade guard is splendid, the motor is wonderfully smooth and quiet, and it's a funny shade of blue-green. Awesome. Go get one, it's better than all the others in its class. Just go, get it. Be happy.

This was a GREAT purchase! I almost went cheap and thought about buying a Harbor Freight cut off saw, but I looked at a few reviews and realized my time is worth more than it takes to buy and return a bad tool. So, spending 3 times as much, I went for the Makita. So, cudos to Amazon, it arrived in two days in perfect condition. Unboxing, found it drop dead simple to use. Went to work today making 25 cuts in cold rolled steel channel material to build a brew stand for my son-in-law. Based on the reviews I went very slow for the first dozen cuts, then started to push a bit harder. Much to my surprise the cutting started to go much, much faster. There was more burring of material, but for the dramatic increase in speed it was well worth it. When done, I had only used an inch or so of blade material. All the cuts were perfect, 90 degrees. Oh, I had it plugged into a powerstrip that measured AMPs and when pushing hard we were bouncing between 16 and 20 amps, so if you are running on a 15amp service you may need to go easy. All in All a GREAT purchase. I'm sure this tool will give me decades of great service.

If you need an abrasive chop saw to put to work everyday this one will make you happy. Good power and table fence. The quality is there and the smoothness of motion and power to drive through a cut is obvious once you use it. Earthquakes are real in Japan and they do a lot of reinforced concrete as a result they have built tools to support their needs. You won't go wrong with any of Makita's metal grinding tools or hammer drills. Just as smooth as Milwaukee with less weight and better than Bosch with less jiggy knobs.

On straight cuts it works great. Angle cuts are a challenge. First cut I tried at 45 degrees on 1/16" thick square channel the blade deflected so much it cut into the base and left a huge gouge in the base.

I bought this model 30 years ago, and it worked great for 30 years. I receintly bought my second Makita cut-off saw and it has some improvements, cuts fast with good power and speed. Steel aligns well and the saw cuts straight. I think Makita makes the best 14 inch cut-off saw available! JOHN W

When the company I worked for wanted to get a chop saw they chose me do to the looking. After spending time in the Navy as a BT and later as an outside machinist in the local shipyard I figured i could handle it. The 2 things I was looking for was something that didn't way a ton and was well built. When I found this Makita I knew it was just what we needed. We cut a lot of 4x4 1/8 tubing, mostly hot rolled and some 1/4x4 flat bar cold roll and this saw handled it with no problem. When it came to cutting aluminum I put on a carbide toothed blade and it ate through that aluminum like it was hot butter. I liked it so much I bought one for my home workshop and after 12 years it's still going strong. And if you ever get a chance to watch that old Monster Garage or OCC tv shows, guess what ? Yea they use the same saw.If you can not afford a $600 cold saw and / or a $900 horizontal band saw, this is one that deserves your attention.
