Never got this thing working. Looked at other's comments about messing with bios settings but it would always hang at the BIOs screen never loading any further. Bought a different SATA extension card and worked out of the box.

The major reasons I chose this one were 1. It is a 1x card that does not need a 16x PCIE slot and 2. It came with a CD with the proper controller files that make it work just great.

Out of the box, this card was recognized by the latest Debian Linux. However, in my case I couldn't get the bios to boot even with the sata os ssd directly attached to an asrock H87M board WITH sata drives plugged into this card (but the drives were picked up in Linux once connecting them after the boot process started)After trial and error, I found by switching the drive controller from AHCI to IDE in asrock's bios, everything works as expected. Hope this saves someone the time or giving up.

Put this in my Unraid server so I could add additional disks. This is one of the models recommended by the Unraid forums, but the particular card I got ended up being faulty. It worked great for a month, but then I started encountering UDMA CRC errors on the disk attached to the ASM1166 card. Shortly after that, Unraid stopped recognizing the disk's presence reliably, and I couldn't complete a SMART extended self-test without getting a "host reset" error about 60% of the way through. I ended up having to replace the card with a SAS card to get my server's disk array back up and running.I'm not sure what caused the issue or whether the card can still be salvaged, but I wouldn't trust it with anything mission-critical at this point. I did try using different SATA cables and different ports on the ASM1166 card in case one of these was at fault, as well as swapping which hard drive was connected to the ASM1166 (this allowed me to narrow down the cause to the card because any drive attached to the motherboard directly would always work fine, and any drive attached to the ASM1166 card would throw errors).

I got the 8 port SATA PCIe card. Right off the bat, after inserting it into my motherboard, the board would not boot. I am using an Asus ROG Strix B550-F Wifi board with the latest firmware ( Version 2006 build 2021/04/08). The motherboard would show the UEFI BIOS splash screen and then just sit there forever, unable to progress or boot into any operating system or even pull up the BIOS pages.I spent a while trying to troubleshoot that, some guides online said to remove the card and set the PCIe slot modes away from "Auto" and into "GEN1/GEN2/GEN3" mode then re-insert the card; I tried it but it did not seem to work. Finally, I read the paper instructions very very carefully, and noticed that it says to plug in your devices before inserting the board; so I plugged a SATA HDD into SATA port 1 (as labeled by the paper instructions; the one closest to the case bracket), and still nothing. Then, I changed the SATA cable to plug into the 3rd port instead, and magically the PC booted, got past UEFI BIOS and booted into Windows 10 as normal. Amazingly, the HDD even showed up in Windows without installing any drivers. However that did not last, because I quickly (actually not so quickly, spent a long time troubleshooting this) realized that only one SATA device was showing up in Windows. After a lot of cable swapping, I finally gave up and decided to try installing the drivers. Now, installing the drivers is a serious consideration, because they are included on a mini CD in the box. Its 2021, I have not bought or built a computer with a CD drive in over 10 years. Luckily, I had a USB DVD drive collecting dust in my closet, which I was able to use and get the drivers off the disc. As instructed, I installed the files specified by the paper instructions, and Windows 10 immediately recognized the other HDD connected to the device. It was like magic.I will update this review if I encounter any more hiccups, but so far its working with two SATA devices plugged into ports 3 and 4 on the card.Overall, I cant help but feel like this whole process was rather ridiculous, never before have I encountered a PC component that prevented my motherboard from even booting, and requiring a CD drive to install drivers (no website to download from) is just ridiculous. If I hadn't happened to own an optical drive already I would have been really screwed. These days most hardware "just works" plug & play style, even in Linux (which I havent tried this card in yet.... not looking forward to that), so I would expect a better installation experience.

So I decided to turn an old computer into an Unraid Server, but I got too ambitious for my own good and found myself without enough storage connections for the drives i got. My board when using two NVME drives in the two m.2 slots available only allowed for 4 out of the 6 SATA connections to be used. And since I bought 4x6tb drives and wanted to use an old 3tb drive and two SSDs I had sitting around I didn't have enough plugs. Looked online a lot... folks recommending some very expansive SAS cards and what not. After some brain storming I decided on this guy as I don't need top performance or anything of the sort. And I was very pleased when it worked just fine.Of course its kind of early to tell still but the system has been running for an entire day with no problems. I transferred around 4tb of data into the server and not a single hiccup. And I still have 3 open ports for future expansion. For the price if you need something simple to add some more drives to your Unraid system them this might just be what you need.

Delivery is great. Card look and feel is good. Installation was okay (Server 2012 R2, manual install) but OS was not listed for support but a manual add made it quick.Biggest turn off and problem (see picture) is that labels of SATA1-8 ARE NOT CORRECT! I had to connect one drive, ultimately, boot upthe machines, wait for SATA summary scrren to come up, and note the drive port. As you can see SATA 1 = 2, 1=1, 3=1, and all others =3. 5 port 3s and it only shows first 4 drives connected but not in ranking/port numbers. Drives 5-8 show in Windows but not BIOS or card summary screen.Once all installed it was fine; however, this was a 3 hour installation because of manual port logging. With ECC RAM on a server, boot up is not super fast. What should have been a 20-30 min install wasted a lot more time. Card is working well and will have to stress test it later.
