Nurturing & Feeding: A Comprehensive Guide to Hornworm Care

Bearded Dragon Enjoying a Hornworm

  1. Housing: Your hornworms will arrive in a ventilated deli cup, which is their ideal home. This container ensures they have adequate air. Avoid placing the container under direct sunlight, as hornworms thrive in cooler, shaded areas.
  2. Feeding the Worms: The included chow is the perfect food source for hornworms. Keep an eye on the food level in the container and replenish it as needed.

3. Feeding to Pets: When it's time to feed your reptile, pick the hornworms gently using soft-tipped tweezers or clean hands. Depending on your pet's size and appetite, serve the appropriate number. Remember, their bright color and movement can stimulate the appetite of many reptiles, making feeding time a breeze!

4. Monitor Growth: Hornworms can grow quickly. If they've grown larger than your pet's preference, you can delay their growth by storing them at lower temperatures, but always above freezing.

Vibrant Green Hornworm Eggs

Eggs

This is where it all begins. Hornworm eggs are tiny and spherical. Within a few days (typically 2-5 days depending on conditions), these eggs will hatch, giving birth to voracious little larvae.

Hornworm Larva

Larvae (Caterpillar)

The hornworms spend most of their life in this stage, gradually growing and molting through several instars. Over approximately 20-30 days, they'll increase their weight exponentially, feeding heavily and preparing for the next stage. It's during this larval phase that they're often used as feeder insects.

Hornworm Pupa

Pupa (Chrysalis)

Once they've reached their maximum size as larvae, hornworms burrow into the ground or find a secluded spot to pupate. This pupal stage can last from 2 to 3 weeks. Inside the pupal casing, they undergo a remarkable transformation.

Carolina Sphinx Moth

Adult (Moth)

Emerging from the chrysalis, the hornworm transforms into a large, sphinx moth. In this final stage, they live for up to a month, focusing primarily on reproduction to lay the next generation of eggs.

Delivered on time. Because of how cold it was outside, some of the worms were lethargic looking. Once I placed the container upside down on the lid of my beardie's tank, they warmed up and started moving. Minimal death. They're all moving, eating and doing their thing. Now we just wait for them to grow. I'm not sure how to feed these guys. They send instructions on how to make the food but not how to feed them, that's confusing.

They came on time and as expected. Our mail lady was super nice and personally walked them to the door because it was cold out. Some were stuck in there shed but there’s nothing anyone can do about that. So I gave those to my lizard first. And I immediately cleaned any poop I saw by the food and flipped the container over. It is a fair price for the amount of worms you get. Would so recommend to anyone looking. Give this seller 5 stars.

When the caterpillars came I was so happy to see that they sent more food to make for them since they often run out of food. The caterpillars were doing amazing and growing and eating. There came a point where there wasn't any food left in the tub. I mixed the food per the instructions I put the food at the bottom of a smaller tub I already had. I transferred the caterpillars after the food cooled down. The next day the caterpillars started dying. Because of them dying I couldn't feed them to my bearded dragon because I didn't know why they were dying.I sent a message explaining everything to the seller just so they were made aware of what happened. The only message I received was a short message saying I didn't purchase from them because the tub is different.... So apparently I picked some random caterpillar seller, there's only like three on Amazon, to complain about caterpillars. I was just trying to let them know "hey this is what happened". I will not be purchasing from them again, which is sad because there isn't very many places to buy caterpillars. The website Dubia is really the best place to purchase insects for your reptiles!!!

They came in very small. I think the 4 that died could have survived if they were a little bigger. One I could tell wasn’t going to survive it was much smaller than all the other small ones. I managed to save one by putting him towards the food and he actually grew after a couple of days. I think the small ones don’t know how to climb up so leading them to the food can help.I believe there were 36 alive ones. Which is great for the price. Shipping did take a long time about 3 weeks but for the amount of worms I get I will order again. They also sent me extra food to prepare myself. Great idea if you want to seperate them since they grow bigger if you do. My beardie loved them!
