I don't have a lot of experience with things like this. I have to say, I'm not a fan, though. It is very difficult to open and close. Certainly not with one hand. It does grab onto the rope, and it feels snug, but there isn't much actually grabbing on. Not sure I would trust it at a high height. 3 stars.

I am not an experienced rock climber, in the sense of having lots of equipment experience. But I have spent months in trees with chain saws and harnesses, and a lot of time on steep and dangerous roofs, as well as more time than sensible on steep mountain faces without ropes.I'm confident that this heavy steel device (over a pound) would work to clamp a rope and to arrest a fall. But I don't understand why anyone would choose this over some other devices. This thing cannot be readily positioned at any spot on a rope. It has no fixed "open" position, which would allow a rope to slide through it. The end of rope has to be fed through it while the device is manually held in its open position. (The initial opening movement requires brute force, but a firm hand squeeze of the entire device will then keep it open.) Then it has to be manually held open while the device is slid on the rope to wherever one wants it to be.Other devices, designed for rock climbing but also suitable for industrial use, don't cost much more, are made of light alloy, weigh less than half as much, have safety certifications, are less likely to fray rope, can be put onto a rope at any point along its length, and can be easily slid along the rope. (Search Amazon for words such as climbing, ascender, fall protection or belay device.)I see that some other devices, made of steel and of essentially the same design, have good Amazon customer ratings, but mostly from ordinary guys who have done some roof work and such ‒ not from skilled climbers who are familiar with lots of rope equipment.

The product is as described however the descriptive pictures are misleading. Because of excessive springs tension this is not a simple one hand operation to open or close and gloves are mandatory because of all the skin pinch points. Only 1/4" of rope receives contact from the 1.5" of curved teeth, the rest sitting high and away from your rope. One should expect an earlier small bite progressing to a larger contact in a fall arrest. There are two pinch points but remember only one does the job, the other is the backup. With harness attached it did hold my weight and stayed put while I jumped off low points. As an ascent follower it was cumbersome as it would not remain vertical but tilt forward, lifting the safety rope unless that was tight top to bottom without slack.
