Works well to hold position. However, the ascender attachment point puts the rope in a 45° bind.

This is a game changer for me on roofs. Very easy to use, saves so much time when using safety lines. This particular unit is very sturdy, has features to not allow it to loosen up , definitely worth the money

Needed this so I could tie off at top of roof peak. That way I could be tied off on both sides.

This rope grab is made from quality materials. Extremely easy to use with smooth movement up and down. With any amount of downward tension it grabs and absolutely no slack. I feel completely safe using this rope grab.

This is a technical device and needs a technical explanation, so you know what it really can do before you buy it. Most similar devices like this listed on Amazon have brief unclear explanations as to what the device is really meant for and what it is actually capable of! Hope this helps!I made a mistake on my previous review and am making a correction to give more accurate information. I read carefully before purchasing this for a construction job I was doing, realizing that it may not function for what I needed it to do, as a number of points in the Heading as well as in the following description that are inaccurate as to what this device actually is and is designed to do! Ad description: "It can be used to rock climbing, high work, floor escape, rappelling, mountaineering rescue, high work, floor escape, rappelling, mountaineering, fall protection etc." The heading states it is an ascender which means it allows free ascent but locks up to any downward movement. most devices listed on Amazon are either ascenders or descenders but not both. therefore there was some question as to exactly what this device was. I believe there were either little or no instructions that came with the device, either. This device is not suited for rappelling, or a situation where you need the device to control rapid descent where it can stop you at any point in the descent. The heading states it is an ascender which is a most accurate description as to what this device is, however you can move downward as long as you do not have to lean against the device or rope for support enabling you to pay out rope through the device. There are hazards in doing this as outlined below. The rope should be laid out straight downward with enough length of rope/wt. to keep itself straight and taught. Kinks and coils in the rope can cause the device to hang up and not lock properly and you may fall!! As pictured a spring automatically pulls the handle to the rear of the device and toward the user to the locked position with the jaws grabbing or locking on the rope stopping all downward movement. The unit must be installed on the rope with the plastic roller up and the handle/loop toward the user. It has a clamshell design enabling you to open the device and install or remove it anywhere along the rope length. This feature has a 2nd safety locking lever which prevents the screw from accidentally coming undone and releasing the rope, so that you don't fall. The device needs to be secured to a D-ring on the users fall protection harness with a load rated carabiner and swivel. These enable the device to swivel with the rope as you move and turn so as not get tangled up with the rope thus causing a device malfunction where it opens to unlimited downward movement. Secondly these also get it far enough away from the body that the same is prevented from happening by the device tangling up against the users body causing a malfunction. The good news is the device functioned beautifully for what I needed it to do! I was installing metal with a slick surface on a steep pitch roof in Jan/Feb of 2022, to the point that it was difficult to stay in the standing position w/o falling down & potentially sliding off the roof. I used this device with 100% nylon (mfg. recommended) 5/8 rope (the max size of rope the device was intended to work with as I would not trust 1/2 even though it would probably work fine. The device is great for use on a roof in that it locks up completely with body wt pulling the lever to the rear of the device (toward the body or downhill) thus grabbing on the rope. this enables you to work freely with both hands esp if you are in a position where you are sliding downhill. On a roof you have the ability to move down hill if you can stand on your own w/o the rope holding you as you grasp the bottom of the body of the device and pulling it sideways to you so the lever moves toward the roller at the uphill end of the device, opening up the jaws to manually pay out rope as you move down hill. There is an inherent danger in doing this... by doing this you are defeating the automatic lock up of the device. If you are not real level headed about working up on heights and you start to slip or slide while doing this and freeze up in fear, you may keep paying out rope till you go off the edge of the roof! If you slip or have any problem while doing this let go of the device & allow it to lock up! And, be super careful paying out only very small amounts of rope allowing the device to lock up as you get near the edge of the roof till you get as close as you need to be to work.Summary this device is great with any skilled trained user that fully understands the capabilities of the device. You must be fully present and aware of what you are doing while working up at heights and with the device at all times! If you are using it to pay out rope and are not paying attention to exactly what you are doing at the moment you may end up going over the edge of the roof! ON THIS PARTICULAR JOB THIS DEVICE KEPT ME UP ON THE ROOF AT ALL TIMES USING IT CAREFULLY AS STATED ABOVE, AND THE JOB WAS DONE SAFELY. I'VE WORKED CONSTRUCTION ALL MY LIFE. I NOT ONLY STAYED SAFE USING THIS DEVICE, BUT FELT SAFE WHILE CONNECTED TO IT. I AM NOT AFRAID OF WORKING AT HEIGHTS, HOWEVER, I WOULD HAVE FELT EXTREMELY UNSAFE (& SCARED) WITHOUT IT AS ON THIS ROOF I KNEW I COULD HAVE FALLEN FROM MY FEET TO THE ROOF AND STARTED SLIDING DOWNHILL AT ANY MOMENT WITHOUT WARNING, WHICH HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES AND THIS DEVICE IMMEDIATELY STOPPED ME EVERY TIME! (ALSO THIS DEVICE IS ANSI Z359.15 RATED.)(REGULAR FALL PROTECTION GEAR USED ALONG WITH A SELF RETRACTING LIFELINE, WOULD NOT HAVE ARRESTED ME FROM SLIDING OFF THE ROOF. IT IS ONLY DESIGNED TO ENGAGE TO ARREST AN ACTUAL FALL AND WOULD ONLY LIKELY ENGAGE AFTER I SLID OVER THE EDGE AND BEGAN A FREE FALL. A PERSON WILL GET INJURED IN THIS SCENARIO REGARDLESS IF THEIR FALL IS ARRESTED PRIOR TO HITTING THE GROUND! SO I CHOSE THE ABOVE DEVICE FOR THIS PROJECT, AS THE MAIN INTENT WAS TO STAY ON THE TOP SIDE OF THIS ROOF IN THE FIRST PLACE! THE ONLY DOWN SID IS IT SLOWS A WORKER DOWN BYREQUIRING MANAGING THE ROPE AND DEVICE IN ADDITION TO THE ACTUAL CONSTRUCTION WORK. BUT, IN THE LONG RUN THIS EQUIPMENT MITIGATED THE HAZARDS TO THE EXTENT THAT THE PROJECT GOT DONE FASTER WITH IT THAN WITHOUT.)

Bought 2 units, returning defective one. Locking lever is positioned too low to catch notch on the bolt barrel. Without the user depressing the lever, the bolt may loosen & unscrew itself, disengaging grab teeth from rope. Failure of the locking mechanism is the deal breaker.Bolt thread was not de-burred properly, preventing the bolt from screwing in completely. However this was fixed with a forceful twist.Brass coating seems to easily come off the edges, exposing grey steel. Rest of build seems strong.
