The Treble Bass Expander (TBX) is a detented, stacked 250K / 1Meg control that enhances your tonal palette. It functions as a standard tone control from 1 to 5; after 5 it decreases resistance, letting more bass, treble, presence and output flow to your amp. No battery necessary.

I used the TBX in a telecaster. It is a stacked dual potentiometer, a capacitor and a resistor. The potentiometer is special made and it is no-load in the neutral (center) position. Turn one way to influence treble, the other way to impact bass. I speculate that it is like a focus knob plus a treble cut circuit. Before installing look at drawings and pictures to help make everything fit in the control cavity. I can vouch that the TBX works with single coil Stratocasters and Telecasters.

I wish there were options for the color of the knob for matching purposes or a metric version of this pot beacause all of the knobs I have around are metric and not English post sizes. This is an inexpensive option to get something usually only available in expensive custom and limited edition guitars costing thousands.Great mod for S-S-S strats or ST imports or teles or TL imports. A little tougher on a TL because of the metal control knob platform. Just drill it out slightly larger to fit it.It is like having an exhaust modification on your guitar. A secret little switch that adds a growl.I love it and have more of them on the way for adding to all of my guitars that do not have humbuckers. Can be added in about an hour if you count the time heating the soldering iron.If you already have the English size pot posts then you can easily swap out your knob to match.

Works great as a high pass filter above 5 on the tone knob. At 5 or below works as a regular tone knob. I use this with a set of Fender Vintage Noiseless pickups with the "Eric Johnson" mod using the second tone knob to control the tone on the bridge pickup.

Stock guitar pickups always see a slight load due to the way they are wired. These pots and the way they are wired allow you to have stock wiring and sound up to the number 5 position and at 10 there is no more load which is perceived as clarity or brightness (if you want it.) The transitions are clean and the installation is not difficult if you can solder. Highly recommended for tone nerds like me. Installed two of these in my 70s Strat with vintage pickups. The upper one for the neck and the lower one for the middle and bridge pickups.

The tonal options it provides are fantastic. Hi-Pass adds an airy crispness and clarity that I couldn't get before. Low-Pass takes the neck pickup on my tele all the way to fuzz producing lows, which is outstanding. It's not the same sound as a standard tone pot, but for the price, it's worth experimenting. It's a keeper for me.The shaft is longer than the pot it replaced, so I had to use an extra nut and washer to get the height right.Wiring instructions provided are hard to read which is unacceptable, but thanks to the internet, I was able to figure it out.The motion is smooth, but too stiff. It's starting to break in, albeit slowly. The detente neutral position is too pronounced, it almost feels like the end of it's throw. I can easily spin my CTS volume pot with an un-knurled knob with my pinky. I have to grab the TBX with two fingers to turn it. Not a deal breaker. Hoping it will loosen up eventually.Need a solid shaft option. I have a bushing in mine and it works well enough, but the precision will never be the same. On a nice guitar, a knob that doesn't spin perfectly on center just looks like crap. Not a deal breaker but it should be better.

I love the centre detent and it gives my MIM a quality feel similar to what I am used to with my MIA's. Sound wise it is probably crisper but I couldn't do a back to back as I don't have another guitar the same spec as my previously unmodified Strat.Search the internet for wiring instructions as the ones supplied are useless. The shaft is quite long so you may need to use the nut from your original pot behind the scratch plate to back it down a bit so that the knob doesn't stick up in the air.I would fit to another Strat I was modifying without hesitation.

I have modified just a few guitars in the last few years and have been surprised how much I enjoy this tone control now. it really does brighten or darken your whole tone. It's very versatile and easy to install. its dark side is a typical tone control till half way and will brighten up your tone a touch by adding extra resistance to ground but is not as dramatic as the tone warming effect of turning the tone down.... just my two bits. I have this control on three guitars and looking for this to take the tone spot on another guitar.Just one warning if you have a cheep guitar with small potentiometer you might have to drill a larger one to fit this in it place but it is totally worth it

....that's a lil' Clapton joke there.....sorry. I posted a picture of the Phostenix mod of "Doc's mod". It's kinda' half grease bucket half TBX. ....I put this is in two of my strats (the ones that didn't already have one...soon to be three...which is why I am on this page now)....and love it. For the .022uF I use a Sprauge 196p Vitamin Q, for the .001 I use a MojoTone Vitamin T oil cap...cause I can't find a vitamin Q in that uF. What this mod does...you have actual tone control...across the board....and still have growl even when you are cutting frequencies. It (the modification from the standard Strat TBX diagram) does make the guitar signal a little lower, so you have to turn the amp (or board or pedal or signal processor...you get the idea)...up a bit to compensate....and unless you have one of those pig box amps..... that clip to your belt...who cares...because it gives you tone CONTROL....it doesn't sound like you threw a pillow over the amp cutting highs...and the lows roll off evenly.

A solid and versatile tone control. With the right mods, the only tone control you will ever really need. A wonderful range of tone and solid build and performance. The only gripe that I might have would be that the tone knob is rather stiff, but if you are not into tone sweeps that really isn't a deal breaker. More than pays you back on the accessibility of tones it allows to your pickups. Can't recommend these enough. If you don't like them, you just need to change your wiring and capacitors up, the tone you seek is in there just waiting to be released...
