We buy a lot of these and have not had trouble with any of them. Works well in temperature extremes, no issues.

So what’s not to love about this thing?Well, I almost deducted one star because these shelves (I got both 8” & 14” deep versions) both are really TOO tight fitting in between the rails, making it no fun every time I've had to install or remove/move one, I've had to work very hard banging on it to get into or out of position every time, & on more than one rack (so it’s not just one rack’s rail width that’s the problem; in fact, I’ve never had ANY other rack-mountable device be difficult to install/remove like these shelves are). It just barely fits, and I mean BARELY.In fact, the first time I installed both of mine, it tore up the "NavePoint" label you can see in the photos on the side, right around the center (facing outward, away from the shelf & toward the sides of your rack/case). That label is just stuck on there as if with a strong double-sided tape, but they tore right off due to having to work the shelf back and forth, up and down, and in and out (giggity) while literally banging very hard on it (ditto) just to get it into position. That also scratched my brand new shelves the first time I installed them, albeit only slightly since I could see it was scratching it up and then tried very hard to stop damaging it while installing it. Still, it's INEVITABLE that when I move them again, I'll have to work hard to force them out and then back into wherever I want them next, and they'll surely get their NavePoint lost before long as well as gain more and more scratches in that beautiful black painted finish that makes them so attractive.Still, the scratches can’t be seen except up so close that no one will notice, at least for now. Plus, they’re on the outside-facing parts, where your rack might hide any such blemishes. I have one in an open-sided rack (not a case) where you can see the outside edges of things, but still, the tiny scratches on that solid metal can’t really be seen, to be fair to NavePoint. It’s just too bad they didn’t design it better by making it so that the shelves are easy to get in and out of there, like every other piece of equipment I’ve ever mounted over the decades. But alas, these shelves are both very attractive, and they'll do what you need them to do (I'm trying so hard to repress the urge to giggity in this review, it seems). Once in place, they aren't going anywhere, not only due to four rack screws holding such a small object, but also because of how tightly they fit between the 19" rails. The shelves feel super firm, and I have full confidence that the heavy stuff I'm putting on them is totally safe there. One reason I chose this brand and model is that these have a lip that goes all the way around the edge (phrasing). That means that if you put, among whatever else, small things like a screw or whatever, you won't lose your screw. Others, you should take note, don't always have that lip. I find this a great feature.Of course, you might want to put something on there that needs to extend over the edge, such as a device intended for a desktop (thus not rack-mountable) that's larger than the width and/or depth. In that case, this lip that I love might be exactly what you need for your shelf NOT to have. So, the point is, whether or not your intended use for this shelf requires you to be able to put things on it that extend over the edge, vs. intending to put little stuff on there that you don't want to roll off onto the floor or worse--inside of or behind a rack where it might be difficult to retrieve, the lip is an important thing to consider either way, imo.As briefly alluded to above, I find these shelves to be great-looking. They look very professional, and the black finish blends into the overall look of my racks oh so beautifully. They look as professional as can be, and feel as well as look extremely strong and reliable. So you get beauty as well as strength and surely a very long life, I'm expecting. I'm sure these shelves will outlive me by quite a few years, even if the NavePoint name/logos on the sides are doomed to be torn off after another move or two. They'll still look great, since it's solid black beneath them (yes, I should've just left them off after they first got torn off, but their backs were still very sticky so I thought I'd stick them back on for now).Unless you need a shelf without a lip on it, I can't see any possible reason not to buy one of these. If I need any more shelves, I won't even bother looking at every single brand and model like I did before buying these. I'll just go and search directly for "NavePoint" and get more of these (note that they come in several different depths, so whether you need a very shallow one, a very deep one that'll feel extremely firm and stable, or anything in between, it seems they have a size to make anyone happy).Lastly, I’m sure you’ve noticed that the shelf is vented to enhance air movement, which is not only very important to protect devices you put on it that generate heat, but also (whether or not you have hot stuff on there) will not create the kind of equipment-damaging heat that a solid (unvented) shelf could create in your racks/cases that likely have rack-mounted devices that create a hot environment in there as it is. A solid shelf can actually make your heat problems much worse, so I love this vented version, especially because there’s enough venting to allow for good air flow, but it’s designed well enough that you can’t even really see the vents unless you’re close and looking for them.In other words, after installed, those vents still allow an elegant, attractive solid black appearance to most rigs that’ll look as sleek as the solid black models. And remember, even if you don’t plan to put any powered devices on it now, you might decide to do so in the future, so it’s probably a good idea to get a vented version for that reason. Plus, you have to keep in mind that any heat-generating devices BELOW the shelf will benefit from this shelf’s vents. You wouldn’t want to put a solid shelf right over an amp, obviously, but even if not directly over a really hot object, it’s a good idea to enhance air flow in general inside and around all your gear, esp. if you’re using an enclosed rack-case. Venting is just the way to go for many reasons, imo.In sum, now that you've been warned that installing the shelf will take a lot of work, and you'll need to think carefully about the angle you start out with when trying to wedge it between the rails (most likely having to bang it out a few times after you get it partially in there so you can come at it from a different position), all that'll be left is the very happy ending this thing is sure to give you!

This shelf is well made and fits well in each of my two separate applications. I installed two in a 2-pole rack and one in a 4-pole enclosure. There was no "tight squeeze" and the tolerances on the shelf holes seem to be really good so that the shelf lines up perfectly level in any 1U slot. The slotted vents are a plus and the little lip is nice, too. I recently ordered a few 8" versions of these to extend the back of my existing full length enclosure shelves while staying within the bounds of the enclose so the rear door will close. I discovered by happy accident that it works pretty well. The only really minor drawback seems to be that the fastener hardware is hit and miss. I ordered three of these shelves. One came with a packet of screws and washers which worked well with the round threaded holes in my two-pole rack. One came with no fasteners whatsoever. One came with a packet of 6mm screws, washers and the square screw clips that worked well with my rack enclose. So, I advise you to be prepared with your own fasteners.

I purchased this item to free up a larger shelf that was holding a slender PC on it's side. This shelf has been a dream! When it arrived, I examined it and discovered that the whole shelf is black! Not just the front and top parts, but the bottom, as well ! What an attention to detail ! No one is ever even going to see the bottom, but they painted it anyway! That's some serious attention to detail. The other thing is the edges on the front and back! They keep things from sliding off! I had to take away a star, though, because those lips don't keep things from falling over! Oh well, you can't have it all ! If you have very low profile items, this shelf will do you good!
